Large Scale Central

Build challenge 2012 - You asked for it!

Since Shawn said he can’t/won’t, here it is:

These choices subject to $30 limit:
-FINISH a project that has been back-burnered for at least 6 months (like your hotel from last time, Korm!).
-‘Build’ a ‘set’ from your leftovers (any scale) and GIVE it to a child who’s shown interest in trains. (with pictures of the child receiving it, no fakes!)
-Build a camera car, and then film your layout with it.(MUST post the vid! - I allowed extra on this in case you needed metal wheels or a cheap used camera)

$20 limit on these:
-Build a rail customer structure/complex. (served industry)
-Modify, detail and weather a piece of rolling stock to match a specific prototype photo.
-Put together a mini scene that tells a story from your childhood.

No those aren’t easy topics, but youse guys wanted a “challenge”.
Since we started late, the challenge period ends Midnight Pacific time on is Sunday, February 12, giving you 33 days.

Standard challenge rules apply - If you already have it in your possession as of noon local time today, can trade for it, or outright mooch it, it’s “free”. Scrounged items count as ‘free’, but outright theft of them is strongly discouraged (ie, ASK!) If you have to buy it, the exact dollar amount (less tax and shipping) costs against your kitty. We’ll also exclude the cost 1 tube of glue, 1 jar of paint, and a pack of fresh hobby knife blades - should you need those.

Ready! Set! Procastin… err, Build!

I’ll pass…I’m about “built out” for right now…

Interesting…

Puts thinking cap on.

I haven’t finished the $10 building challenge yet :stuck_out_tongue: Hmmm…maybe I can resurrect my camera car project. Kill two criteria at with one shot.

Like Victor Smith… Rebuilding a Camara car to fit my Camera for night and day videos… Got rid of the plastic wheels and doing some new wiring and mounting… Not done yet tho…

Hmmm… I’ve got a crossing shanty that never got beyond the acrylic sub-structure. But I really don’t want to derail the boxcar project. I need to finish that one first.

I’m in, I’ve got little red caboose that needs to join her sister. this is just what’s needed to get er done.

Gonna try to finish this. Need to get the mechanism working, then come up with some sort of valve gear. Unsure on tender.

Did I mention that I move into my school dorm on Saturday? So this is gonna be quick n’ dirty.

Allen, I have a lot of projects I’ve been collecting bits and pieces for for years…some of them even fit nicely into your challenge criteria…Sadly without a spot to work on them I’m not sure I’ll get to any of them.

Chas

I’m in and it looks like camera cars are popular this year. That was on my “to do” list and the camera and card are ready to go. I just have to learn to shoot a movie and design a car!

That's what the top of the washing machine, the freezer, a tv tray, or (if you're really brave) the kitchen table are for :D

Addendum Another board member contacted me yesterday with an offer of providing a really, really, really great prize (Not gonna say what until it’s a done deal)… you guys might just kick yourself if you don’t try for the brass ring this time!

I figure I might get the “tin” ring if I work hard! Or is thar a “tin dong?”

I am going to give it a try. Maybe if the grain elevator from GR Magazine will qualify for the challenge. I need one.

If it's gonna get a siding or placed along a team track, it counts as a served industry!

That is my plan in the spring and I can afford more track. This is a hard one for me when I do not have the junk/treasure that some of you have at hand. I do have redwood coming out my ears. So that is a challenge

Offer to swap some redwood for what you need. There might be a few takers. Here: http://www.largescalecentral.com/LSCForums/viewtopic.php?id=16130

I’ve been given permission to reveal the Prize for this year’s “Best of Show”

Daniel Peck has graciously donated to us a brand new steel 24" unpainted truss bridge, and even offered to pay the shipping (within reason)!!!

Much better than the used books I gave out 2 years ago, eh?

What am I going to do with a 24"trestle thats almost as big as my portable layout :stuck_out_tongue:
