My first thoughts on the Buddy L loco was that it was a piece of garbage. It would not run well on track power. All my other locos would run fine. The Buddy L would stutter and stop. After only a few hours run time, wiring to the front and rear trucks shorted and burned. Rewired the trucks, and it still wouldn’t run more than a few feet. The Buddy L runs one leg of the power back to the tender. The loco will not run without the tender connected. I decided to gut the tender, as well as remove the smoke generator. That did the trick. Loco runs well now. So, now I decided it might just be worth the effort to do a little painting. As I took the body apart, I was fairly impressed. The boiler is metal. All the detail parts are pretty robust and sturdy. They are attached to the boiler with silicone, making for easy removal. The boiler is pretty much empty, allowing for additional weight, or batteries. Disassembly was very easy and straight forward. The electric motor is fan cooled. So now it’s time to do some painting.
