Buddy L 2-6-2 Prairie

My first thoughts on the Buddy L loco was that it was a piece of garbage. It would not run well on track power. All my other locos would run fine. The Buddy L would stutter and stop. After only a few hours run time, wiring to the front and rear trucks shorted and burned. Rewired the trucks, and it still wouldn’t run more than a few feet. The Buddy L runs one leg of the power back to the tender. The loco will not run without the tender connected. I decided to gut the tender, as well as remove the smoke generator. That did the trick. Loco runs well now. So, now I decided it might just be worth the effort to do a little painting. As I took the body apart, I was fairly impressed. The boiler is metal. All the detail parts are pretty robust and sturdy. They are attached to the boiler with silicone, making for easy removal. The boiler is pretty much empty, allowing for additional weight, or batteries. Disassembly was very easy and straight forward. The electric motor is fan cooled. So now it’s time to do some painting. The red is coming Jerry. What you see is how it came, copper boiler. Ralph

I like that copper boiler!

I like the placemats…

Ralph I cant wait to see what you do to it. I have the same one I got from ridge road for $35. Mine actualy runswell except for some major slipping issues. I added weight to it ad helped some but still needs more. It actually ran and tracked better then my Bighauler ten wheeler. How did you get the train to run without the tender wire hooked to it? I should play with mine again and see if I can turn it into something.

Shawn, I had to figure out which wire fed power to the tender and which returned the power to the loco. I soldered the two together and gutted all the electronics from the tender. Added some weight to the tender so it will track better. Ralph

What, the Buddy L or the placemats :) No, I thought I'd bring something a little nicer to run at Roosters. I've still got a combine and coach to paint before then. Ralph

A little chicken scratch should keep him busy.

The smoke box unscrews from the rest of the boiler. Made painting much easier. I was worried the copper finish might not paint well. But it was not a problem. The plastic domes were another story. The paint beaded on the surface. I’ll have to strip them and try again. Ralph

Ain't my dog! Wouldn't own a dog that bounces when it barks. Will give him credit for being such a small dog I don't know where he stores all that piss! Secret tanks in the hind quarters or something?

SWEET......you bringing a Taser for me to play with! So once the cat and dog are on their backs twitching who's next? Better bring Shawn or leave the Taser at home as you guys are too old for that stuff and I'm not refreshed on CPR.

If my dog pissed on somebody's train................I wouldn't claim him either :D Ralph

Hey Ralph it’s page two. If all you’re going to do is show us bits and pieces of a loco you can’t figure out what to do with, send it this way and we’ll get a build going.
