Brrrrrrrrrrrr

You're right Ron, that cold air did come south. At 4 p.m. we were at 32 which is cold for the High Desert in December. We'll burn lots of wood tonight!
It's relatively rare for our cold air to head straight south, spreading into the west coast. Usually it flows into the mid-west. We are more than happy to spread our winter around just a little !

Doug,

The news says it will be 12 degrees tonight at my cabin in Wrightwood.

I believe it. It was 28 here by 7.

Doug and Gary,

Got you both beat, todays high was 15 degree’s with tonights low at 2 degree’s. Hey Ron you want your cold weather back?

Now THAT’S getting downright COLD for down there.
Meanwhile we are about to cross the zero threshold. Might make it all the way up to +15 tomorrow. Might.
Still not train running weather. Those rails are REALLY iced in. In fact, I have stayed clear of most of the outdoor layout: Too much snow to work through to get over there.

Hi guys:

Environment Canada’s Sept predition for 2010 upcoming winter was extreme cold and normal heavy snowfall accumulation.

Last winter was very mild and low snow fall. I shoveled my lane only 3 times!

Ottawa Canada is a region were extreme cold and heavy snowfall accumulation occur every winter. Last winter was the first exception in my lifetime.
All the heavy snow and extreme cold drifted just south of the Canada / US border.

This year I still have not shoveled my laneway. Only 3 inches of snow on the laneway. Tomorrow Ottawa will have rain!

South West Ontario, the Maritime Provinces, New York City and the East Coast of the US all have experienced severe winter weather.

So far here in Ottawa: a free ride. Hope it continues. Only 8 weeks left of possible severe winter weather.

Less than ten years ago, minus 30 Celcius daily low with a daily high of minus 20 Celcius commenced in early December and lasted all the way through February. Ottawans only went outside if absolutely necessary to go to work or to buy groceries. Trying to start a car after sitting all night at minus 30 Celcius was painful to hear as one listened to the pistons move up and down grinding the cylinders at the initial start up. By February there was a brisk business at the travel agencies as Ottawans flew on mass to Mexico. Many Ottawans just couldn’t take it anymore.

How cold is minus 30 Celcius? If the wind blows you run from your car to the building. Just miserable.

This winter I can still wait for the city bus wearing only a light weight jacket and sweater. Weird weather but I love it. New York has had far worse weather.

But I must say, ten or twelve inches of snow would not shut down Ottawa. Slow down traffic a bit. New York needs to invest in proper snow clearing equipment.

Hope this easy Ottawa winter weather continues till Spring as it did last year. February is the extreme cold weather month. Maybe Ottawa will be lucky again this winter.

Somewhere out there I do have a RR

We haven’t seen hardly any of that white stuff despite the temperatures but that may change this weekend. I’d be a lot happier if it was about 30 degrees warmer!

Hard to believe how mild it has been up your way. Enjoy it while you can im sure it wont last. The problem with NY and snow clearing is the budget cuts. Normaly they are not too bad. My area in Northwest NJ Sussex County, we have an awsome road dept. Our 30+ inches of snow from last years blizzard was cleared from the roads a few hours after the storm. Same for this past blizzard. I never have to worry about being stranded.

I couldn’t believe it when I heard NYC was using trash trucks to haul snow!

It amazed me as well. I am not so sure I would want sanitation truck drivers operating those snow plows.

That being my old stomping grounds, I can tell you they have been doing that for decades. I takes a huge amount of equipment to remove even a small snow fall, much less what they got recently. They practice the ‘Any port in a storm’ philosophy.

We have it easy on the High Desert, dirt roads don’t get plowed!

NYC sanitation dept is in charge of snow removal. Im not sure how many cities do this. Most areas its up to the road dept.

I know our is and they plow the paved roads sooner or later. It’s more entertaining that way since so many have never seen snow!

St. Louis does the same. Large fleet of equipment heavy enough to push a plow. I thought it made sense for ghetto mentality.

Isn’t it grand what your Union can do for you! Another reason to NOT live in NYC! I like where Doug Arnold lives, you don’t have deal with that stuff! Here we just put in 4 wheel drive and keep going.

Paul

As often as my boss’s trash trucks get stuck, I wouldn’t have thought they would make good plows.
But then NYC doesn’t have the hills and mountains to deal with.
Ralph

woke up to light snow and about half inch already. Temp 25 degrees. Suppose to to get 4-6 inches today. hopefully get the plow out before work at 11am.
