Boomer's Snow Train Project

Simply put, my railroad needs a snow train. It will be based on the D&RGW equipment from the O series MOW cars although not exact models.

The plan for now is to have a Leslie style rotary snow plow, water tank car, three K-27s and an assortment of support cars.

I will post picture highlights in this thread but a full build log with more info than most will care to read is posted here: https://cibolalmrr.com/m-o-w/rotary-snow-plow-omy/

Bout as well dive in with the hardest piece first. The rotary.

In the beginning there was parts…

The boxcar goes under the saw.

Inside walls as the model will have a rudimentary interior with basic details visible through the windows.

Outside walls.

The roof. Removable, so I can get the interior done after painting and to access the battery and lighting.

Fox pressed steel trucks.

Ready for primer.

Onward to the shroud and rotor head…

The rotor assembly.

A printing error caused a redesign of the transition portion of the shroud. The bottom deck stuttered during printing and caused a 1/4" shift from center.

Styrene and model putty to the rescue.

The rotor head needed work too.

Looking pretty good now.

Brutal details and this weeks new curse words listed in the build log. https://cibolalmrr.com/m-o-w/rotary-snow-plow-omy/

Wait. In the Cibola build log you mention uncooked pasta as being involved. Really?

This is an unbelievably cool build, Boomer. Nicely done. Way to push through the problems.

Oh Good Lord …you had to ask !

Rooster: goes shallow for a look around on the surface.

Nice details, Boomer. But you missed 2 rivets as noted below (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)

Hate to be a stickler, but I know you would hate yourself if you got all done and realized those two were missing (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

thats awesome

Yeah, what Devon said… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Speaking of rivets what are you using for them sewing pins or escutcheon pins or something else?

Rick,

HO track nails.

You know this for a fact?

Those track nail heads look awful round to me? I suspect one could spike their HO track with those nails if they were not striving for accuracy and authentication like many require?

Craig, Yes, your probably right, I used them on my Loader build boiler, in fact I need to get some more of them.

Rooster, they are used in HO scale to hold the flex track to the road bed not to spike the rail down(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

The rivets are Atlas HO round head track spikes #2540.

Got the idea from Barry Bogs. First used it on the triple dome project.

Dan as one to strive for accurate rivet counting there are 4 rivets on the bottom and 3 on the top, there is only 1 (one) rivet missing, now go back to building th pizza we are still waiting!!!

Yes, I know for a fact, because I actually followed the link to his blog post and read it. Boomer says in his blog post he used “Atlas HO track nails”.

Wow amazing work. I like that idea of using the HO track nails.

Will this be an operating model?

I’m not sure how I missed this thread. The detail work is top notch.

Shane

Amazing work! I love all the rivets, just beautiful. Hadn’t heard of the HO nail method, cool!

Really nice approach with the 3d printing taking up a difficult bulky part, yet adding crisp details from brass and styrene.

Rivit counters. Don’tcha love’em?..(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Ken,

Problem with rivet counters is some that do count rivets can’t count ?
