Large Scale Central

B'mann 'Boose bash

Awhile back Lou offered for sale a B’mann center cupola caboose kit. I had in mind at the time building a Drover’s Caboose from the kit since I’d always wanted one. Then a few weeks before the York show, he offered a LGB Drover’s Caboose for sale. So I bought that one. Now, what to do with the kit I already agreed to buy?

Bash it in to another one of these, of course.

This time I plan on leaving in the rear windows, just to make it “different”.

First thing was to measure and cut the body.

Then rearrange the pieces and glue them together.

I used a stiff piece of Plexiglas on the bottom and 1/4" angle at the top.

Next I removed some of the original bracing that runs along the top of the caboose body in order to get the roof to fit.

This made it easier to measure where to cut the roof. Fitting the roof, I located the cut marks just in front of the poling pocket and cut it on the band saw.

The end wall has a notch and the smaller cut roof piece fits into this.

That’s as far as I’ve gotten so far. I plan on using the existing roof walks and grab irons. The existing cupola won’t be used as I want a more squared version like on the other one I did. I’ll just use it for the curve along the roof line. It’ll be made from Lexan and v-groove siding glued to it.

looking very nice. I have a B’Mann kit I started last summer but have not finished yet. These kits are a lot of fun to build…

About a quarter of my car roster is the kits. Shame they don’t make’em anymore.

Ken, yes it is a shame. I bought a few kits, but many of my Bachmann cars were purchased second hand and run through the car shop. It was an inexpensive way to get some cars. That caboose is coming along nicely, I am interested in how you redo the cupola. I have a Bachmann bobber that is in the shop, waiting for a cupola rebuild.

I never did like the cupola B’mann uses on their Cabeeses. Looked to me like something off a Cabin Cruiser.

What I’ve done to both the long caboose and the shorty caboose I have is rebuilt them so their more square.

Lexan cut out and fitted in the opening.

Glued up…

I’ll use 1/8" v-groove siding to match the sides of the body and cut out the window openings. I’ll cut strips from the siding for the trim around the windows.

Ken
Very clever and unique bash on a b mann caboose .I like the square cupola.

Quite clever, Ken. I am going to take the last Caboose kit I have and make into a 1/29 Raritan River Caboose. Only got a gazillion projects ahead of it.

With the coming of nicer weather outside, the inside stuff kinda took a back seat. Between yard work, putzing around on the layout, and working on the mill, I haven’t had much chance to work on this. I did get the siding on the cupola though…

Looking good.

Nice work, Ken…

Really nice work Ken. Yes, it’s too bad those kits aren’t available anymore. They offered me many hours of bashing fun back when.

Looks great. I really like the square cupola.

Terry

Yes, it does look good. Well done, Ken.

You better get that done before the weather gets nice cause your wife will kick your arse for taking her clothes pins!

Looks great Ken. How about a couple port hole windows.

Yeah I need to build a couple more Southeaastern Looking cupolas for my Bmann cabins…

What a great idea and a great looking 'boose. I wish I would’ve thought of that. You get an A Plus.

BTW, I haven’t heard the term “cabin cruiser” since I was a kid and I ain’t one no more. Maybe it’s a regional, i.e. “back East” word. Somewhere I have a snapshot of myself piloting a family friend’s 25 foot Steelcraft cabin cruiser on the Niagara River back around 1950. I felt like, umm, Captain Nemo? No wait, that was a submarine, right? And no, we didn’t go over the falls.

But what is wrong with a “cabin cruiser” cupola? Cabeese are sometimes called cabins, and they do cruise down the tracks. Sometimes even with a rocking motion.

I like your cupola better then the awful Bachmann one, I was just being a smart ------

I don;t think the cupola is ‘awful’ but the prototype is the pair of cabins that the EBT built in their own shops…and as such every time I see one I think EBT… Just wanna make mine a little different and not so noticeable…

Good work as usual Ken. You’ve done it again… got me thinking about a spare caboose I have here. . It is an Aristo bobber that needs some sort of upgrade.
