Bluestone Southern's Logging Switchback

The last scheduled addition to the Bluestone Southern’s Outside layout is the construction of the Switchback for the logging operations… Earlier this year, we had constructed the Logging yard area just south of the tracks to Freeman Spur…

Below is a layout of the track placement prior to it being installed:

We have finally got a break in the heat wave, so we have started the track work up the mountain.

Below is a view from the deck:

Below is the start of the switchback from the 3 track logging yard towards the right… The track across the trestle is the start of the actual switchback.

And the track running on the retaining wall is a switchlead for the logging yard… The short track from the left hand switch to the switchlead switch is

the connection from the Evansville Yard to the logging yard.

Below is an overall look at the logging yard and switchback start…

The Semi-circle track to the left will eventually be a Loop from the Evansville Yard area and will become a Rail-Barge loading facility

for agricultural goods to be transferred to the barge’s.

This topic will be updated as things progress.

Geared engines will now have a purpose on the Bluestone Southern. Very cool!

Looking great, Andy! I’ll bring my 3-truck Shay and Climax along with a string of skeleton log cars to play on the new grade in October.

Bob

Bob you are more than welcome to bring your cars, but I do have logging dis-connects and skeleton cars here… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Naw, People can bring what they want to run… Scale for extras, Tourists runs, special runs and the logging can be any scale…

Boomer did have problems running his equipment thru the Sparta cut because the edging was riding up of the ground…

I still have a little more area I can expand to… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Well, Boomer will JUST HAVE TO COME BACK in October! (C’mon Boomer! (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif))

Noting this as Ken said the same thing!

“(C’mon Boomer! )”

.

Why not? What is out there Boomer 120 degrees at Noon, but I know its a dry heat? Might as well come back East.

Michigan has what he needs

Really would love to see a drawing of the track plan so that visually I can connect things to where they are when I look at the pictures. Guess I just need to come visit some day to see it for myself. Looks great Andy!!

Pete, below is the track plan for the outside layout before the relocation of the New Memphis area:

Below is the New Memphis location addition trackage along with the town of Freeman Spur:

Where to old Memphis location is on the top Plan is where the switchback yard area starts… It will switch back and forth

to the left of the Evansville yard…

Hope this helps with the visual…

Amazing layout! Wish I had that much room in So Cal to do that large of a layout…maybe one day when we move after the kids are grown

I remember my dad saying that exact same thing!

On you drawing at Memphis, you show a loop which return to the same line it came from. How do you deal with the polarity difference? If it was O scale, that would not be a problem, but how do you resolve the 2 rail polarity reversal?

Ron, my track is not powered, All my locomotives have batteries in them…
