Large Scale Central

Big Little Station

I have been spending some nice summer nights out in the workshop working on a station for my 7/8’s scale (1:13.7) layout. the station is about 25 inches long. Doors are 6 inches tall. The body is hardibacker tile board with simple cedar windows and doors and the walls to be covered in natural random stone. The big windows are backed with plexiglass and doors and small windows with screen to allow for some ventilation. Most of the stone had to be hand split to get it thin enough. The roof will be cedar shingles Progress so far…

Now, that’s BIG! Looking very nice. I like that stone.

Brian,

That really looks good. Look forward to following your progress.

Very cool Brian!
It has been quite nice in the evenings for July!
What are you cutting the backer board with?

Looks good so far. The stone work looks great

Thanks guys. David, For the big sections I just use a carbide tipped hand scorer -

For the window openings I go outside with the dust mask and use a 4 inch diamond blade on a angle grinder. Another nice nite out so back to work… -Brian

7/8ths rocks on.

That looks great Brian! But I’m not very familiar with 7/8 scale–can you post something that gives an idea of the size?

I get it :D

Very nice Brian. We can’t let Ray have all the fun with random stone !

How do you split stones that small without loosing fingers ?

Here’s Scotty L’s chart -

7/8’s is pretty close to Tonka size -

For splitting rocks I used a flat steel chisel with a one inch wide blade and a 3# hammer. About 80% of the stone split well. -Brian

DUDE!!

Progress update - most of the stone has been mortared in except for the top of the chimney. Here it is in place on the layout. There is a 7/8’s scale couple with a G scale farmer on the right and 1/29 figure on the left.

Yeah, I'm guessing it's up to about 30# now. It will probably be around 40# completed. It should be hurricane proof :D .

Looking great Brian.. I made a Grist Mill like that but used 1/4" plywood for the frame.. Never thinking of using backer board.. neat idea.. I use backer board for the bottom tho.. Guess it is east to work with.. Nice looking building, keep it coming.

Coming along great Brian. I like the screen idea for venting. Have you started the first expansion for the RR yet?

Dave

I like the stone work…very nice!

No more expanding for now. I gotta find more time to run. I’m installing a drywell over by the layout this weekend so my patio can stay mudfree. Maybe I’ll take a few pics of the Kubota in action,

Brian,

How thick is the backer board you are using? It looks thinner that we have used. However, it may be because the size is so much bigger. Jan got looking at your work and is getting ideas. This is concerning.

Ric,

its just the 1/4 inch thick stuff. Plenty of strength even for a big heavy structure like this with a bit of reinforcing at corners and joints.

Go Jan!
