Baldwin Sharknose kit in 1/29th

Hi all.
I am currently busy making the master patterns for a Baldwin Sharknose kit to be done a one piece injection molded resin body with etched grills.
It will use R-T-R trucks and should be available at the end of this year or the start of next year.
I am making it for a chap here in the UK that wants several as he does NYC, he intends to then sell them as kits to help cover his costs. Anyone who is interested please feel free to get in touch and I will make a note of your contact details and pass them onto him when it is finished.
Here is a link to the thread on our UK site G scale central where I am doing a build thread on how it is done:

You can see my other work on there by looking for Krauss maffei ML4000.
Hope you find it interesting?
Cheers Rob

Rob the model looks great. You have a natural talent at building locomotives. How about doing a shell for an RS-1. Lots of talk about people wanting them.

Chuck

Wow!

Howzabout the UP veranda turbine next?

Only kidding…

Looks great Rob, what is the rough price range you think it will fall into?

Thanks for the posive coments guys, it helps me a lot.
I am a bit cautious about setting a price so far, mainly due to it actually being somebody elses project. But he is a great guy and not greedy, so I think it will be well priced. I can only say that the ML4000 I did came out at £345 UK pounds sterling which was VERY roughly $520 USD. Now Shark is much smaller in size and the under body tanks are not attached to the body so the mold can be far smaller, the truck frames will be on R-T-R trucks where as the ML4000 had VERY expensive seperate ones, there will not be a big bag of lost wax brass castings either as they have little in the way of “clutter” detail on them. The mold costs for the ML4000 were massive and I only estimated on selling about 20 at the most, so I had to price them to try and break even (not make a profit). The Shark will have much smaller set up costs and the product itself will be smaller and far simpler, plus he will be selling far more kits than I did which will spread the start up costs even thinner. So I reckon it will be SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper then the ML4000, plus the shipping should be far less too. Sorry I can’t be more specific, but I don’t want to build up peoples hopes and then say it will be more.
Cheers

Rob - what power trucks do you anticipate using on this model?

tac

WOW! Very cool project and with so many being around the US on many different roads could possibly be a hit on this side of the pond! Keep us informed on availability.

Chas

The trucks to use are the ones from the Aristo Craft RS3 or FA1 units, these rae readily available and are cheap and reliable, plus they are the correct design for the Shark.
There will be a bit of advertising when it is available, but i will be posting on here to let folks know first.
Thanks again for the nice comments.
Cheers

Thanks, Rob - lots of luck with the project!

Rob nice project I would be interested in putting a couple of them in a Penssy 5 stripe green paint. put me on the list.

Hi Guys
Just to say I have had a bit more time “Sharking” today. there is an update with a couple of pictures on the G scale central site. The link is at the start of this thread.
Cheers

Oh, plllleeeeeeaaaaaasssssseeeeeeeeeeeeeee add me to the list also!!!

I got this info from Rob, sounds pretty good!
The shark will have fuel tanks, front pilot, cab interior, etched grills, possibly cast brass side steps, and it is 1/29th scale. You will need to fab up a simple flat chassis from metal sheet, find a pair of trucks from an FA1 or other suitable donor, make and fit your own glazing. He might supply a set of NYC decals but as yet he isn’t sure if he will or not.

Really a nice looking loco. Well done. You could have told me Jerry what you needed the AC bricks for. HeHe. I may have to get a couple of these for my collection. Later RJD

RJ, sorry! I did get two FA-1B frames from Mike, with side frames. Found two new motor blocks on ebay, so waiting on Rob now! I thought it looked like a fun project. Will the the only kid on the block with one and probably the only in the state! Still need two more motor blocks.

Any updates Rob?

Hi all.
Yes David, there has been a bit more progress on her, it is very sporadic due to my shifts but the end is in sight now.
Follow this link to the site in the UK where you will find the updates including pictures and info. http://www.gscalecentral.co.uk/f/m155599.aspx
I can’t get over the level of interest in these, they must be really hitting the spot with the diesel guy’s!
Thanks again
Rob

Followed your link Rob. This is really coming along great. Fantastic work.

I have no interest in one but I'm really enjoying your build as it's inspiring! Nice work!
