Back to School Challenge?

Hey fellow Challenge Acceptors. Great progress on everyone’s part so far. Todd judging by your results I feel you may have shot a bit low on the challenge target. Nice job! It think the wood loads may round it out nicely.

As for an update with me I still have not touched the ruby bash. However I did finish 3 separate projects. One I didn’t even know I had! The links to each follow.

Saltillo Water Tank DONE

EBT Saltillo Tankhouse thread

Accucraft Hoppers Re lettered. I’d still need to convert to 1:32 scale couplers but need to conduct at test at a neighboring rail way before moving on this. But at least I feel I can run them now since they are correctly lettered.

Thread on Relettering hoppers

This Last one is the one I didn’t know I had. I gave a clinic on switch building and needed a harp stand for my stub switch model. And it’s Done

Harp Stand thread

I actually spent every waking hour for a week and a half working on this stuff to have ready for the FEBT reunion, but I had a blast. All of this represents the most detailed and finished level of modeling I’ve ever attempted and I have some new found confidence moving forward.

I’ll now get my butt firmly to work on the Ruby…

Great exercise! As a fellow teacher, I noticed the “homework” turned in on this site was consistently making something – not going out and buying it. What a contrast to school as the distributor of extrinsic rewards as grades. Here are three pages of reports on self-determined projects, not purchases, projects accomplished for their intrinsic value. Obviously, we have a group that has not confused “school” with education – evidenced by three pages of testimony applying learning for its own intrinsic value.

If we gave grades for hobbies people wouldn’t do them.

NOTE: I do remind my students that I know that the most oft asked question in school is " What ya’ get?"

Wendell,

Funny that you said that, because I was thinking along the same line. If I got even half of my students to actually motivate themselves to accomplish more than bare minimum effort my junior high students would be excelling! The first question is always, “how much does this count towards my grade?”

While I did become a certified teacher, I never actually took a teaching job. I ran away to sea, instead, with the Lockmaster just a few steps behind. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-innocent.gif)During my student teaching days, I remember students asking, “Will this quiz count on the final grade?”

“Here’s your sign.” I never said it, but I sure wanted to.

I think I’ll skip my “challenge” the. USS Daedalus can wait. I’ll be keeping myself very occupied till new years with my current NEW project, the Angry Beaver foremost, and a couple of N diddles, more on those later.

Are you getting in to “N” scale now?

Craig, Only a little, I’m very down on N mechanisms but recently I have found Japanese models are pretty good. I have one big idea that can only be done in N but its also going to take a long time to finish even though it’s also tiny.

Devon, I already have one micro in N surprisingly I never took any pics of it. I’ll post some this weekend.

If you want some N scale equipment let me know, as I’m willing to part with them for a low price… I have a few structure pieces, assorted rolling stock, and I think some vehicles. It’s just collecting dust right now, so they aren’t doing me any good.

OK So still pluggin’ away. The planking is done and half of the window and door trim is done. I will finish the rest of the window and door trim and get a stove and some mail sacks in and then put the roof on.

Things aren’t as straight or as perfect as I would like it but I have to say this project is growing on me and I think will be a nice addition to the box car.

Devon, it looks good from here. And you can hide many sins with a coat of paint and some weathering.

Now that my saw mill has been repaired, and planted back on the railroad, I can go on an expadition to find my workbench. Once the missing workbench has been found, I can get to work on one of my stale projects.

I understand the need to search for the work bench. Before I could resume I had to clean the garage. The table saw was buried, the band saw was buried, and the bench was buried and I had no extension cords and the air compressor was nowhere to be found. Finally got it all back and cleaned and was able to proceed.

I can’t for the life of me … I couldn’t see my 1st work bench so I got a second … great place to pile stuff!!(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Ha Sean I seriously think that is how I operate. You say a second bench I say a second room. I have my man cave where I am supposed to do my modeling, but it was so cluttered I moved to the garage, it got so cluttered I moved to the couch. At some point I commandeered the dining room table. My wife finally said enough is enough and I cleaned all my scattered mess up and now its all in the shop and about to be moved to the man cave now that winter is about to set in. Right now all my work spaces are clean, its kind of an interesting anomaly to see. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

Whew! I am not the only one. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

who cares about workbench-space?

for years now, my workbenches double as storage for building materials and tools (my wife calls it heaps of junk)

the actual building spaces are the yet unfinished parts of the layout.

well, this here being a schoolproject, i made an exception.

i am almost ready to go!
