Large Scale Central

Back to 1/29...PS2CD 2 bay hopper

I’ve been absent here since for the last 3 months I was building my 1/8 scale (7.5" ga.) caboose. But now I’m back to modeling in the basement again. My project at the moment is a Pullman Standard PS2CD 2 bay 2604 cu ft hopper car. Actually there were quite a few of these built and some are still riding the rails today. This would be a good model for USA Trains to make, since so many roads had versions of these. See Athearns website for PS2 2600cuft hoppers for some of the other road names. Mine of course will be painted for the DT&I. I started cutting plastic for this project on December 28th and are very close to taking it to the paint shop. I didn’t take any construction pictures (that I find really slows me down since I then sit around looking and playing with the pictures instead of working). Anyway, here is a picture of it as of last night. That’s an Athearn HO model sitting on top of it.

How do you like it? Brian

Beeeeeeeyootiful!

Nice build Brian

Brian that an awsome looking model! Can’t wait to see it painted and finished.

BTW how about a picture of the caboose you built?

Chuck

Nice hopper…

Brian that is going to be one great hopper when finished.

Can you give some sizes of materals used - handholds, car sides etc.

Nice job on the hopper.
Now where are the caboose pictures

What Rooster said

Thanks guys! Bob, The main car sides (the black pieces) are 1/8" ABS, and the other pieces are various thicknesses of styrene. I tried to match the look of the real scale pieces where I could but hid understructure where needed. I made a very detailed/accurate drawing of the prototype and then redrew parts of it to standard styrene parts/sizes. I find I have to work to a plan, I envy those that can just wing it and it looks good. My drafting background makes me believe that if I can, I should make it as exact as I can. The grab irons are made from .028 brass rod. The rivets are Tichy Train Group .05 dia. rivets. The roofwalks and brakewheel are from USA Trains (I like that they’ll sell parts seperately). OK, now about that caboose…I’m not finished with it quite yet but I’ll post a couple pictures of it here now… This was it before I started paint work…the body is made of 1/2" furniture grade plywood.

And this is close to where it’s at now.

Caboose is a beauty. Rock Island?

Awesome work Brian. I can’t wait to see both of these in full paint.

Jon.

Brian thank you for that info.

As the others said good work on that caboose.

Yep me too Brian! Excellent work as usual! ;)

OK, I went out to the garage to put a coat of primer on it…we have perfect conditions here…sunny and 3 degrees [:0]…good thing my garage is heated! [;)] The primer went on well (half the battle). I was worried about getting past the posts/grabs to get primer onto the ends of the body. Here’s how it looks now. I’ll let it cure a few days then I’ll get some paint on it…stay tuned.
