Are you going to Portland, 2019 ??

Several of us were on a different thread about next years convention in Portland and it was suggested to take all of our discussion to a new thread, so here it is! So far there are 4 or 5 of us contemplating riding the Amtrak Coast Starlight from Los Angeles up to Portland for the convention next year. I am hoping to at least make the convention , may or may not ride the train, Greg E. Might be along , kidnapping Ted D. From the Bay Area along the way. Also talk about a drag and brag of our collection of things there too. Would be cool to have some of the wrong side of the world guys… east coast guys bring some cool stuff out west for us to ooh and aah over. Look forward to meeting any LSC people that are up there.

One note , the “Starlight“ travels through some beautiful mountains in Northern California, but for some reason they cross the scenic area near Mt Shasta and Mt Lassen (yes it’s my family) in the middle of the night, and same for the return trip, but still you will get plenty to see along the CA coast and in Oregon.

I am not from the other side, I am from what you guys refer to as the flyover people, Mo. But I am planning on being there.

Dennis

I’m trying to attend. No promises, but will attempt to come down from the Seattle area. If anyone is coming up to Seattle for preconvention tours let me know and maybe we can hook up.

Greg will attend and his wife, and pretty sure my shanghi attempt will succeed with Mr. Doskaris.

Sort of thinking of doing the NG convention the week before.

Yep, funny but the Coast Starlight name tells you it is during the evening.

Greg

Amtrak does not serve Hawaii, but I am toying with the idea of making an appearance. May drag a crewman along, too!

My understanding is that the NG convention in Sacramento is the week after Portland. Portland is August

27-31 and Sacramento is September 4-7. I know the dates were changed awhile back to avoid conflict, so maybe I have it wrong. Can anyone confirm?

The Other Greg

Portland is our usual arrival point in Oregon, on the occasions that we fly down from Vancouver, and is our end-point when we fly direct into Eugene from a stopover elsewhere. We just might be there for this show, who knows?

Sadly, the train takes a massive dive inland as it leaves the state to the South of Oregon, travelling up to Klamath Falls, Eugene and then up the Willamette Valley to cross over the river and into PDX. Be advised that the route from KF to Eugene is utterly spectacular, especially if you live in a flat country as we do. Going over the Cascades at the Cascade Summit, near Chemult, is something to relish. After that, it’s literally all downhill to PDX.

It’s a journey we love to do, even though we’ve never been further South than KF.

Gregory you are correct. The dates were moved so that people could attend both / reduce conflict. New dates are September 4-7. Website under construction http://www.nngc2019.org/

As is done with the NGRC the website and broader advertising do not start until the current year closes.

I too am doing both. My plan is still to try and drag Devon to Portland.

OK, go to NG after GR convention… thanks for the correction Greg! Anyway, a week in Sacramento… I have never been to the museum there either…

when you go to the 2019 page, it’s got nothing but an INCORRECT link to the 2018 convention, the 2018 convention site is .com not .org https://nngc-2018.com/

Greg

It’s on the POA&M. Should be an easy sell to SWMBO, as our daughter lives across the river in Vancouver, WA.

Well I was thinking about going and ride Amtrak from my part of the country. Now I just looked up the dates and I may be hard pressed to make it as I’m doing a camping rally in Sept about a week apart. Ouch. Later RJD

I’d have to add 10 hours Tucson> LA…

With so much to do there, I think I’ll invest my time in Portland.

On a Rail activities map I have, there are 10 train related places to go, plus the convention and home layout tours… and all you fine guys to meet and greet.

Hopefully I pick up my niece and her 2 kids … Louie and Emma had a grand time on the C&TS RR, we’ll probably skip the bus for the layouts…

Oh it’s not the Willa- met river, it’s the Wil Lam ette … which divides Portland on it’s way to the Mighty Columbia …

While aboard the Vincennes, we came alongside the Willamette to receive fuel. From their topside announcing system came, “Aboard the USS VINCENNES, welcome alongside the USS WILLA - METTE, stand by to receive shotline.”

Good Lord, don’t they know how to pronounce the name of their ship?

Being a native PNWer, I read Willamette the right way and wondered why are we discussing this? And then I remembered places like Issaquah, Snoqualmie, Humptulips…

I only brought it because after Mt St Helens blew it’s top, I heard Willa met on the TV news…

I won’t be there…but I will promote meeting anyone that cares, in the middle of the Rideau Canal, at the Beaver Tails hut, In January/February of 2019…just let me know the time and day…

I really do not understand what Fred means, but anyway it looks like a lot of us here will be attending., or hoping to attend in some fashion.

Dennis, I am one of those that grew up in flyover , live in flyover and drive through it a lot, and would much rather be in flyover country than the major cities that call us flyover country.

Even the flat (boring) farm land and rural areas pique my interest, as there are lots of different things to see an=long the way in these areas.

Oh come on RJD, trains are so much more exciting than a camping rally!! lol

Greg is Ted going to host a clinic on any of the many skills he has? Boomer still going to do the BBQ clinic?

Nobody understands what Fred means Pete, don’t feel bad (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

I doubt Ted or I would host any clinics, want to go to have fun. Hosting clinics is not only hard work but takes time. My hat is off to those who do it on a regular basis.

Greg

I had suspicions but not this:

Looks like the Friar will be putting on a winter coat …
