Large Scale Central

Another turntable project

Wow, that looks great, Ken! Does the pit have a drain to allow rain to run out?

Shawn, West Grove is down in the SE corner of the state. About an hour north of Baltimore and 45 minutes SW of Philly. There are people up there in North Jersey that have layout’s I’m sure. I was up that way a few years ago delivering plants to garden centers and happened to get on the GR subject with one of the salesgirls. Her dad had a GR, so I know there may be some up there. Just a matter of asking around. How far are you from Scranton? They have a club in that area. PGRS. http://www.gardentrains.org/gta/community/clubs/clubs_info.asp?recid=65&type=1&mode=view

Ric, I could certainly do that…

Yup, Ray…I have holes drilled in the bottom and plan on putting a bed of stone under it for drainage. The drain for the downspout is not to far away, so without to much digging I can tie into that.

Ken,
A really nice job on your turntable. Since we do not live to far from each other I would really like to stop by and see your railroad sometime when you are running it, if you wouldn’t mind.
Karl

Hey Ken
Do you know how well that lazy Susan base will hold up outside? The bearings in mine look like plain steel (i.e. can rust)

Im pondering either using one of them (since I already have one), or do something like Bruce did (which I’ll have to buy).

Bob,

There are stainless steel lazy susans available. They are used in the construction of outdoor furniture, so they have pretty high load ratings - at least 250#. I can’t give you a specific website, but a quick google search gave me something like 264,000 sites!

yea, Northeast isn't that far at all. Get fuel at the FLYING J all the time.

I wouldn’t mind at all Karl. Be happy to see you!

Thanks, I live less then an hour from scranton. Im actually heading your way early aug to visit some friends that moved to Thomasville. I plan on hitting Lancaster and gettysburg. Do you have any recomendations? I remember as a kid we went to Lancaster and there was a nice indoor O cale layout open to the public. I forget where it was though.

Shawn,

There is tons of railroad stuff to do in the Lancaster area. Not far away in Strassburg is the Railroad Museum of PA and across the street the Stassburg Railroad runs several steam passenger excursions every day. There is a toy train museum that has numerous operating layouts and a tourist trap place that I think is called Cho-Cho Barn that has a large operating layout. That might be the O-Scale one you are thinking about.

It’s only about 90 minutes from the Lancaster area to the East Broad Top which, if you have some time, is well worth the trip. EBT operates Sat & Sun only.

Roadside America is probably the O gauge layout you saw as a kid, It’s near Kutztown somewhere. I remember being there as a kid too, but I have no idea exactly where it is or if it’s still open. The only other 0 gauge layout in the Lancaster area could be in the train store next to the RR museum.

While in Lancaster, there’s the Strasburg RR, The RR Museum of Pa, right across the street, and there’s a TOY Train Museum in Strasburg also. Hershey Park is about 45 minutes away if you like amusement parks. And if you have small kids, Dutch Wonderland is a small amusement park for kids. For the wife there’s plenty of outlet stores across from Dutch Wonderland and all up and down RT 30 to spend your hard earned dough at. …

Thanks for all the advise. I will have to hit those places. Thanks again

Anytime, Shawn! Your tourist dollars are welcome here…

an update on the turntable… someone had suggested screen door roller for under the turntable. I looked into these and thought possibly they might work.

After some consideration I decided to go with a wooden slider, just to offer some resistance when the table is turned to on of off-load a Loco.

If that doesn’t work the rollers can be added later. The ties for the ring rail are in place and awaiting(still) a rail order.

The inner ring for the turntable pit is Lexan glued to trimplank braces. The outer ring on the pit is some formica splash panal we had laying around from the disaster in the kitchen. I filled in between those 2 pieces with styrofoam just as a filler and topped it with Vinyl Concrete Patcher.

A coat of Krylon Gray Primer hides the stuff on the inside.

That looks great, Ken! Makes me wish I had room for a turntable of my own.

Thanx, Ray. I’ve always been infatuated with gallows type turntables. Must be it’s rustic appearance…

Guys, Ken brought the turntable gallows to the “Invasion”, this thing is big. The size is not apparant in the pictures shown.

I guess maybe for the photos I could have placed a boxcar on it for perspective, but anyway, the TT is 36" x 8". The base for the pit itself is approx. 42" across.

That realy is huge with a 6 foot’ lazy susan base!!!

Whoa! I didn’t realize it was that big. Yikes! Where’s it going?

Nah, only a 6" lazy susan. Where I plan to put it is to the right a bit from where the gon is sitting. The turnout in the forefront beside the tank car has been moved about 6" this way. The turnout where the gon is has been removed.

I been out there looking at how to re-arrange some of the yard trackage. I think it looks pretty good the way it is, just more yard area is needed. We’ll see when the TT is in position. I have a coaling tower and sand house that goes in this area too. Both of those are still in the garage till the TT is installed. Here’s pic of the coaling tower:

Ken,

Looks like your did great work on that TT, but I just know there are a few things you wanted to do over again, so, for a nominal fee that you pay me, I'll take that one off your hands so you can start on the real one to put into your layout....

hehehe
