Large Scale Central

Another turntable project

I’ve been contemplating this for quite awhile. Then Bruce Chandler came out with his turntable article and I decided “Now was the time”. I liked his idea for the turntable pit so I based mine somewhat on his plan. The turntable itself is loosely based on the gallows turntable at the Orange Empire Museum in Perris, Ca.

I used 1/2’ square redwood to construct the turntable witha 6’ lazy susan base.

The pit itself has a Hardibacker base with styrene walls that have been filled with styrofoam with a topping of vinyl patching cement.

Still have a bit of work to do on it.

We have some very talented people on this forum…

Dear Ken,

Great job, nice pics. Thanks for posting.

Have you thought about dirt getting into the lazy suzan bearings?

Sincerely,

Joe Satnik

Man, that is looking VERY nice! Well done.

Thanx Joe and Bruce…some people set pretty high standards on here and it’s tough keeping up… On my previous layout I had a similar turntable with a lazy susan.

Never seemed to have a problem with dirt or grit getting into it. I also kept it very well lubricated with grease, so that may have helped keep the dirt out. Unfortunately that TT was too small to handle the Connie, so the new one was made large enough to acommodate both the Connie and a K-27. Plus I wasn’t at all happy with the pit construction.

Dear Ken,

I can see where real railroads had to think long and hard before buying locos longer than their turntables…

Nice website and layout. Has your GRR ever been published?

Sincerely,

Joe Satnik

Nope, never had the pleasure of being published.

Like the TT, the layout is on it’s second go-round. The retaining wall on my first one was slowly decaying hence the re-build.

So far, my ideas go well beyond my budget…

Nicely done Ken.

Looking good Ken

Very fine Ken! I think that it would be a good idea to bring it to Oregon for extensive tests rather than rashly putting it into service back there in Penna. and not knowing about its long term reliability.

Remember, we’re here to help!

Wow–nice work! Are you planning to support the ends–maybe a circle of single rail and a wheel? Or is it strong enough as is?

Haven't gotten to putting down the supporting rail yet. I'm waiting on an order of alum track from Llagos Creek. It wobbles a bit so some kind of support will be needed. I'll probable use a piece of wood or a brass strip as a spring to keep it steady.

Wonder how the TSA will view that?????????? If I even had a suitcase big enough..........;)

Looks great.
My ideas always go way beyond my budget !
If the two ever come together…watch out!
Ralph

Ken,

Have you put drains into the pit?

Ric…yes…

Ken,

A very nice turntable, you do nice work.......... :)

Looking good! Jerry

Ken,

Take a look at what Marty did with his TT. He put the rollers from a sliding screen door on each end of the TT to ride over the track. Cheap and effective.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm, may have to look into that…Thanx.

Looking good. I went through your web, I really like what you did to your layout everything blends in nicely.
Where in PA is West grove. I live less then 15 minutes from Milford PA (poconos). I wish I could find people close to me into model RR. I feel like I am the only one in Northwest Jersey.

Ken,
I believe you could use the table as another engine carrier. It sure would be a nice “drag and brag” for the “Invasion”. (hint)
