Nice. Where you been hiding that one?
That one's been around awhile. Haven't run it since there wasn't a need for it. Had to dust it off and see if it still worked.........seems the batteries are shot so it may need a new battery pack. The reefer in the pic was the battery car.

I’ve had it up to Fred’s, way back when, you guys just missed it…

Hey Bob, when have I ever listened to Fred…

The roaring in the background is my neighbor cutting his grass. I never even paid attention to it when I was out there.

Bob,

You really need to get out more. I switched Craig Leigh without a 2 cylinder live steam shay last year. Plan to do the same this year. The shock is the weasils Fred allows on the tracks. He has really mellowed as time has past.

How common were switchbacks in lumber and mining operations? Are there any pictures?

I need one for the Shay to climb to access the mine ore mill. The initial work on the sidings for the ore chute and engine house are done so it’s time to start moving dirt!

“How common were switchbacks in lumber and mining operations? Are there any pictures?”

Very common and, I would think. Cass Lumber and Little River Lumber in the Smokies were know for them. You can still ride one at Cass with a big switch back.

Cass has several switch back’s on it’s climb up to Bald Knob and Whittaker.

Actually two switchbacks…and if the Big 6 is going to Bald Knob…then it has to switchback at the wye at old Spruce due to a tight curve…

Ken the luber area looks great. Where are the logs? Do have to send some down to you?

Sleep deprivation has invaded once again. It was suppose to be with a 2 cylinder shay, not without.

I have never gotten to see a live steam shay in action. Does it have sound or does it make enough sound on it’s own?

Ric manually controlling his live steam Shay which worked all day as a yard switcher at Craig Leigh.

Ric switching the local industries Scobie’s Fine Foods and Brunt’s Milling and Malting.

A nice shot of Ric’s Shay puffing along.

A change of pace during the standard gauge operations the next day. Ric busy assembling the next train out under the watchful eye of Craig Leigh Yardmaster Doug Matheson. Ric has the task well in hand with a ALCO S-4 switcher equipped with a lithium-ion battery pack and Revolution receiver.

Makes a bit of a racket.............banging, clacking, and hissin.................;)

At least you know it’s coming!

The ones at Cass are like very loud steam powered sewing machines.

Built a bulkhead for the log unloading ramp and a sign to warn locos not to enter the ramp…

And the “operations” begin.

Nice. I really like how you have done the pond with the small vertical logs. Did you treat them at all? Or do they just go down to the water level?

The bulkhead itself is a piece of plexiglass I painted flat black and mounted to the ramp. The logs are screwed to it and just barely touch the water, but I’m hoping they weather bit more. They’re just scraps of stuff we trimmed around here. I was going to treat them with some Linseed Oil, but didn’t know if that would harm the plants in the pond.

#11 works the saw mill…
