American Invasion 2007

Thank you, Fred. Count me among the Montreal excursioners.

BTW, just out of curiousity. What’s the travel time to Montreal?

Jan and I plan to make the Montreal trip. Do we have an itinerary for that part of the invasion? How many days? Are we over nighting in Montreal?

Travel time from Ottawa to Montreal is about 2hours, depending on traffic and road works…

gaétan

I think Bob earlier post today woke me up… We just booked (5minutes ago) for 3 nights at the Monterey Inn. So I guess you will have to endure us for 5 days this year…YESSSSS !!!

Nicole & Gaétan

Ric…as I said in an earlier post…Overnight in Montreal on Monday Night.

Gaetan, will post an intinery as soon as he has it up to date, I’m sure.

If Tuesday is a long day, and you are heading straight home. It might be an idea to stay in Montreal Tuesday night, in order to get a fresh start on Wednesday morning.

BTW....the plans for The Invasion will be posted as soon as Doug gives them to me. He is hosting the bbq/dinner at his place this year.

For those who have not been involved in an “Invasion”, and would like to take part this year:

The dates are from July 19th, through 22nd. Some arrive early on The Thursday and leave on the Sunday. Others arrive early on the Friday and leave on the Sunday.

Some took part in the “Side trip” last year, and this year are going to enjoy it again. It starts on the Monday morning (Early) July 23rd, and lasts two days. This year it’s off to Montreal for a look at a small bit of the Prvince of Quebec…lots to see…There are no storms planned, and North Bay is in the opposite direction !

The Hotel here in Ottawa is the “Monterey Inn”, www.montereyinn.com
or 1-800-565-1311; mention the “American Invasion 2007” for the group rate.

Anyone who is planning on attending; PLEASE RSVP to Fr.Fred at :
[email protected] as soon as possible, if you haven’t indicated your attendance already.

Anyone who is thinking of going, stop thinking and GO! Its a VERY fun time. We drive up, and arrive Friday morning, and leave Sunday morning. Its a long way to go, but the camaraderie and food and trains and all is definitely worth the trip.

Fred,

When are the regular operating sessions??

There is a possibility that we “hit” the National Capital this Summer or Fall. Not firm yet, but looking better all the time.

Hans;

We operate most Saturdays, weather permitting. The operations usually alternate between NG and SG, with a “Run-what-you-brung” thrown in once in a while. There is a regular Wednesday work group group that sometimes runs or operates.

If it rains, there is usually someone around, or working in the shop on a Saturday morning.

Check out the web page at: www.ovgrs.org/ for information. The web page is generally kept up-to-date, by Paul Norton.

If in doubt; call me at (613) 723-1911

Fred,

You said - “If Tuesday is a long day, and you are heading straight home. It might be an idea to stay in Montreal Tuesday night, in order to get a fresh start on Wednesday morning.”

We’ll leave that to “which way the wind is blowing”.

Don’t forget the camera for those of us that just can’t make it. And I’ll see some of you at Marty’s in September.!

I was very nervous about our plans and almost booked a room on Wednesday night, but forgot. Then Thursday AM our RV dealer called and our new mobile hotel room has arrived

I’m still not sure about the Montreal leg. I’ve booked the time off, but not certain I can keep up with you guys while towing 30’ of house.

If your listening Gaetan - Are there any campgrounds near the group hotel? I can deal with a parking lot if I have to, but having a campground with water and power is preferable - Especially if Ric brings all that mid-west heat with him again this year.

Oh sure, blame the red-headed kid from the Midwest.

My desire is to get away from the heat. My Irish heritage likes cloudy skies and lots of mist or the darkness of a coal mine. Highs in the 70’s on a good hot day.

We’ve been having perfect weather around here. A little too sunny, but that can be tolerated with the cool breezes.

I suppose you could park the thing in my driveway, Jon; and travel to Montreal with Ken or Ric. Doug might even let you leave it at his place. Montreal is not a great place for towing a full home around in.

I thought he was the guy that brought along the tornado last year…

Thanks Fred :) Doug has already offered a spot at his place. Not that I wouldn't want to be close to the action, but how could I refuse that view.

As generous as both you and Doug’s offers are, we might decide on a local campground. There are two on Bank Street not too far from the Monterey - perhaps an extra 10 minutes. Kind of nice to have sewer and water hook-ups rather than having to haul it around.

I agree about towing in Montreal. There are some campgrounds outside the city, but that could be a hassle on Day 1 having to go there first. So, if we go I’m thinking that leaving the trailer in Ottawa would be a good call. We could, of course drive our own car to Montreal without the beast attached.

Always a good idea. The less vehicle you have to manoeuvre in Montreal the better (unless you possess an Abrams tank). Late July is always all-direct-routes-closed-for-repair season in that fair city. The indirect routes are either blocked by double-parked cars or impassably potholed but not due for a fix.

Hello Chris

Man! you’re a little bit mean with our great city… But I have to admit that some of your comments…

Gaétan (from Montréal)

PS; Don’t think we ever met, would be great to meet you at Fred’s place during the Invasions…

Alas, when the invasion occurs, I shall be driving back from Cape Breton, where we will (God willing and the tarponds don't rise) have spent two weeks visiting with my mother, who at 84 wants to see for the first time the place where her mother was born (Glace Bay) and meet the great-grandchildren she barely saw or missed the last time she was here from England. Actually, I like Montreal. First place I lived in when I came to Canada and McGill. Good place to get around by Metro and on foot :D

Chis & Geatan -

I understand by looking at the map that the Trans-Canada Highway runs smack through the middle of the island. Is this highway not limited access through the city? Heavy traffic I can deal with. City streets would be no fun.

Gaetan came up with the idea of my traveling ahead of the group on Sunday afternoon. The campground we would set up at is East side of the city, but we would need to drive through downtown to get there from Ottawa. I think this will work since home is straight South from Montreal. That and I get to see Lake Champlain which has been on my wish list for years.
