Large Scale Central

Abbott's Dairy Express Reefer

Your welcome, sir!..

Looks good Ken. The brake rigging came out great. Personally I hate it, as it’s just more to get knocked off along the way

That’s pretty much how I feel about it too, and unless the car flips over who can see it anyway?..

Running on one of the Geezers indoor layout, 48" above the floor, that’s all we can see.

Better have your underneaths in order…

Yes sir!..

“A” end

“B” end

Now for the ice hatches.

Nice looking car Ken. Looks like a fun kit to build.

It’s been…interesting…

Phil’s kits turn out really nice, not to mention sturdy. I am currently finishing (decals) 2 of the 27 foot boxcars. PNG 30 foot refrigerator car lettered in 1890s D&RG narrow gauge sits on my desk, along with PNG Kitchen Car 04013.

I substitute 0.050" brass rod for the supplied aluminum truss rod material. Brass rod is a lot more rigid and less likely to bend under handling.

Ken - nice job! And yes, I put all of the brake rigging on my models

I had thought about using the wire that comes on those flags the utility companies use to mark their underground facilities, since I have a ton of them. It’s about the same size as what the aluminum rod is. I’ve used it before for truss rods, but decided to give this stuff a shot. We’ll see how this holds up.

I’ll bet the underground utility warning flag wires would work just great. Never thought about using that material. As the steel oxidizes, it would look very authentic. Great idea!

I’ve never bought any of Phil’s Kits. Did you do any modifications or is this according to the instructions?

Well, Jake, since this is my first PNG kit, I thought I’d stick to the tried and true method in the instructions. If and when I ever do another, I’ll be a little more open to trying different things now that I have one under my belt.

Looking good.

Jake, I only built one (the first–a 40’ reefer) per instructions.

The other 10 or so are built with my instructions. I found some of my methods easier than Phil’s.

Each to his own, I guess…

That looks great, Is that the size of a Bachmann spectrum 40 footer?

This one’s only a 30 footer, but it’s Fn3, or 1:20.

And all we need now is some paint and decals…

“A” end with a 906 KD coupler

“B” end with no coupler

The roof walks will go on after the paint…which will go on when it warms up a bit…

Now, back to the grist mill.

What a great job, Ken. Might have to build a few next winter.

OK, so now’s the time to ask. I don’t understand the terminology for example: Fn2-1/2
I figured out the n= narrow guage, but what does the leading letter and following numbers mean?
