Abbott's Dairy Express Reefer

When I built the Creamery last year, there were a couple of suggestions made and pictures posted for Dairy specific reefers to load there. One caught my eye since Abbott’s was big around here.

I hemmed and hawed about converting one of my existing B’mann reefers, but finally decided to try one of Phil Dipple’s kits. Biting the bullet I sent the check off to Phil and PNG-002, a 30 ’ Wood Refrigerator Kit

arrived a few days later.

Using the above picture of the Abbotts car and some measurements from the kit, I fired off an email to Stan for some decals.

I had him send me a test print first just to make sure everything would fit.

They did and the OK was given.

On to the build. Bruce Chandler wrote an article describing his build of this reefer. Very detailed and a lot of help.

One of his suggestions was a small plastic case to keep the parts handy and separate. What a great idea, so Off to Lowes I go.

Pretty straight forward, the deck is glied down and then the sides.

Then on to the trim and the roof.

I won’t get into as much detail here as Bruce did. Next come the roof slats. Phil provides measurements for where these go and I refered to Bruce’s article to make sure I had it right.

More to follow…

Proceeding nicely there!

Nice work, Ken…

Very cool…

Nice car build Ken, seems like you’re getting lots of shop time this year.

That’s a mighty trucking fancy ruler ya got there …

You make it look so easy!

I have both heavy weight passenger cars truck from USA ordered and some from B’mann. I’ll see which ones look appropriate when the show up.

That ruler came from PA Heritage magazine I get in the mail, celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. I guess they have a Road show traveling around by truck.

It’s a kit Lou, I’m just following instructions.

Boomer, this will be my one and only and it will travel from the Interchange to the Creamery and back…

Is it done yet? I really need to retire

Thats going to look great and maybe we will see it running in the snow…

Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy Y’Abbott!!!

Ken,

Coming along nicely.

I build my PNG kits a little differently, but the end result is the same. Those kits are a lot of fun.

INSTRUCTIONS!???
Real men don’t need no stinkin’ instructions! That’s the first thing you lose!

I’ve already lost my mind, so I’m trying to keep everything else…

I hear you Shawn. April 1st will be my first day of retirement, but I’m kind of easing into it now.

I had to study the diagram of the brake rigging in Phil’s instructions and in Bruce’s article. Never having done it before it was confusing to me, but I think I got it right.

The truss rods went pretty quickly.

All the wooden parts are done, now it’s just the fiddly bits of metal that have to be placed.

And just a look-see with a set of trucks under it. The one on the right is what it will eventually have.

It’s been fun so far.

Phil’s kits are really nice and straight forward to put together. Looks good so far. Thanks for sharing.

Ken,

Do you have a part number for this box from Lowes?

Yes I do, Gary. Part # 0295169. 16 Compartment Organizer.

You might have to drop the first “0” when you enter it in the “search”.

Looks very nice, Ken. I like that Phil’s kits are so sturdy - they can stand up to my handling them!

I’m sure I’ll give them a real test too…
