A tale of two shays, part 1

Recently I purchased two 2 truck shays and some parts, Thanks Ric! I have decided to make a few modifications to them. Here they are before any work.

I have decided to backdate the first one to pre 1905 with a strait boiler and fluted domes, box headlight and possible cylinder work. After a little work it exploded on my bench

I have now begun work on the replacement boiler.

more pictures to follow soon!

And that’s the reason Jan said those were for you. We look forward to your creativity.

Cool…I thought about them real hard but I’m not ready to go there yet. Looking forward to the molestation Aaron!!!

Aaron,
Great project, backdating the Shay, looking forward to your progress.
Rick

Update: New boiler is coming along, put on the “brass” bands, Delton box headlight installed and an Accucraft stack. I have recycled the original backhead and reinstalled it on the new boiler. I have also riveted the smokebox.

I have also recycled a 10 wheeler smokebox door to put on the boiler

more to come soon

Aaron, looking great…

Yes they have a tendancy to do that to me as well! I got your domes, send me an email and I’ll gettum out to ya first of next week!

Do you plan on doing the pre 1905 crankcase modification as well?

I’m going to enjoy this!

You need some fluted domes? I can swap for the old Shay parts, as I am still provinging what I can to put damaged units back in running condition. Domes, boiler, smokebox front, handrails…

Neat idea. Looking forward to your creation.

Update: work has been done to backdate the cab. I started by cutting the hatch out of the top

I then grafted a piece of a bachmann coach roof to it and some styrene to finish the roof. I then added some “woodwork” to the sides with styrene and made a smaller window using some strips.

@Bart, Yes I plan on doing the crankcase modification as well, I am just trying to figure out how I want to tackle it. I hope to get to that next. More to follow soon!

ITs really quite simple the way the crankcase is set up…you just have to take a bit off the front half…and add a couple bits of styrene to simulate the old brackted arrangment…lemme know if ya have any trouble with it…

Thanks Bart! I was thinking about puting on round counterweights like you put on one of yours, I assume you used styrene for those too? And also did you recieve the email I sent you? I have had a few computer problems and dont know if it went out. Thanks

Message received…just need to find an appropriate box at work, and you need to send me your addy…Oh yes…pictures of some of my debauchery are in order… In these two you can kinda see how the front of the crankcase was removed…viewers at home just look past the 2 cylinder conversion…

and you can see how simple the counterweights actually worked out to be…

Update: Cylinders have been backdated. Thank you Bart for the pictures, they helped greatly. Started by cutting off the front crankcase housing

I then constructed a new one out of styrene. I also added some counterweights made from scrap styrene

my photography leaves a little to be desired but hope to have better pictures up soon, to be continued

You got it! I don’t remember mine being that easy though…I think I took the whole engine assembly apart just to do that. I’m gonna use you method when I backdate the Three truck Shay I got on the Shelf…

Small Update: after searching through some pre 1900’s shay photos I decided to rework the sand hoppers on the back. here they are before modification

I then took a saw to them and removed the middle section creating two individual hoppers

I then made new sides out of styrene, used ceiling fan weights for the tops and tank car breather tips for the lids

I have also started painting a few parts. Here is the finished cylinders and cab which I started painting today

@ Bart, the cylinder conversion was pretty simple, however you still have to pull the bottom of the crankshaft bracket apart to avoid hitting the crankshaft when sawing. all in all a pretty simple conversion and glad I did it, gives it a whole new look. To be continued…

Progress: it is starting to look like a shay again! sand hoppers have been painted and installed along with a new ladder

I have also painted the boiler- I used rustoleum dark gray primer for the smokbox and boiler barrel, then i brushed graphite onto the boiler barrel and buffed it with a piece of paper to create an iron jacket look

what it looks like together so far

work has now begun on gold striping and painting

more to come soon…

It’s beginning to look GREAT. No doubt it isn’t right off the shelf.

Nice looking rebuild Aaron. i like the new roof line.
