Large Scale Central

A Raised Road Bed: A build log for the RGS raised layout.

The track work part of this is done. I still have to run a train over it to find any bugs, but the weather has been uncooperative.

Hopefully this should end the congestion in Delores yard.

Neat! I’m sure it will be cool for operations. BTW, do you have a date set for “Ken Ops”?

Tentatively the last weekend in April, the 27 and 28.

On my calendar. Don’t forget to schedule the great weather! (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

We’ve been lucky, so far. We shall see…(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Things to do with the ashes from your woodstove.

Ballast your railroad.

If nothing else, it’s good fill till you can get some dirt on top of it.

I used a lot of the ashes in Delores Yard. Maybe the moss likes it.

Before winter is over, I should have enough to do this whole area.

interesting. I read moss likes acidic soil, but ashes from wood are highly alkaline… but I saw an example of moss growing on a limestone boulder so hmmm…

That’s what I thought, too, Greg. But a lot of that moss is growing in crusher fines and ashes. Course there is a lot of just plain dirt in there too.

My understanding is that moss doesn’t root into or take nutrient from what it is growing on so it matters very little what it is growing on.

Ken,

Won’t ashes just wash away when it rains?

It really can’t go anywhere. The sides and the ladder roadbed hold it all in place. The rain just settles it down. It’s raining out now, so I’ll take a picture of it later and show what it does.

Dang Ken All, that moss really looks good. You gotta do something with all that ash so you might as well put it to work. Really hoping to make it down to K-ops this year and see it in person.

is there any worry with the Ph of the ashes causing any corrosion problems on either the track rails or the actual roadbed?

I haven’t seen any, Pete. The stuff get’s washed off the rails when it rains and the roadbed is all PVC. Once it gets some dirt down on top of it, and some granite fines put down, it’ll be covered up.

I gotta do something with some of that moss too. It’s growing over the rails in some spots.

I hope you can make it, Randy. If it weren’t for you ordering all those tie strips for me, Hesperus would be trackless…(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Ken

Who’da thought? It looks just as good after the rain as before. You da man!

My only caution would be to remember that water plus ash equals lye. I would be careful working that stuff after rains. Alkali burns are tough. Otherwi the new area looks great! Someday I may get from Michael ravaged Florida to PA.

About the only I’ll be doing out there now, Bob, is putting the side sills on. And if the weather cooperates, I’ll try and get some dirt in there, too.
