A Raised Road Bed: A build log for the RGS raised layout.

Rick Marty said:

Ken, on the old Shasta Pacific I had very good luck with potting beds built into the table top even with the extreme temp changes.

I’m going to see what kind of luck I have with something similar.

And something a little bigger at ground level.

Now to hook this into the irrigation system.

There ya go, perfect.

low growing ground covers like Thymes will spread right out onto the

layout and blend the planters right into the railroad.

Be careful of Sedums, they are damned invasive.

Rick

Those Sedums in the pictures behind the station were transplanted from the old layout, so I know how invasive they are. But they are easily enough kept in check. They just come in so many different varieties, colors and shapes it’s hard to ignore them.

I have a feeling those 2 boxes may be a bit too small for what I have planted in them. I’ll have to keep an eye on them and maybe find some smaller plants to put in them.

Geez Ken, you just keep going. and even after you gave that pink hat back to Shawn too. You’ve managed to get quite an impressive amount of work done this year and it just keeps getting better. I figured you might have trouble keeping things wet for the plants with the open bottom. You might end up with the best of both worlds now. Plants you want will grow where you have the water and the weeds won’t have enough moisture to start poping up where you don’t. Lookin good.

Ha dont let him fool you. He still has that hat. He never gave it back.

Wow Ken Im impressed. That is looking really good and maybe one day when I grow up I can be like you and do the same(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

I have an idea. (Shut up Rooster) I like the Rio Grand sign on the planter box but here is a better idea. Put a sign for each person that visits your layout. When I get old enough and visit you can add the Kittatinny Mt RR. When Bruce runs you can add the Jackson and Burk.

That ain’t a bad idea. I just might take you up on that!

Personally I think your kids will grow up before you do…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Ken, it’s lookin’ just great!

About the winter drainage. You probably have this covered, but in case a later reader hasn’t, this is important. Before the hard freezes come, one will need drain points at the low places. (No need for vent points, because the sprinklers serve that purpose). At several lower points on my layout, I put a tee in the headers, a short drain tube from that running downhill, and a cap fitting at the end. So when the temps go down, and when I have to unhook the garden hoses from the bibbs, I loosen those caps and let it drain. In the spring, I reverse all that. Takes only a few minutes.

Best,

Cliff

Where the hose connection is located is the low point under Delores.

Popping off the emitter tubes under here, too will help to drain the line. There’s also a Tee further up the line that will help. Everything is easy to get to so that shouldn’t be a problem.

Good deal, you’re all set!

Very nice Ken !!(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

I do have to give him credit for one thing. He probably holds the record for the longest build log with absolutely nothing built…that takes persistence…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)
