A Raised Road Bed: A build log for the RGS raised layout.

Wow! Great work Ken… BUT I am mad, read the first page, saw all the build log links, so read through all 8 pages of that, then come back here and read them all again, with witty, sarcastic, evil annd mean remarks added. That killed half a day!

On the raised sections I read you were not doing any skirting , I guess that will help with air flow to keep all the PT lumber from staying wet. Do you have much of a problem with critter there, and creepy crawlys, especially the poisonous kind like black widows? Thanks for all the information , it has me thinking about non ground level for my empire.

Thanks, Pete.

Makes me feel good to know someone besides me can waste a half a day sitting on the computer…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

So far, I’ve had no problems with critters, creepy crawlys, poisonous or otherwise, in, under and around the layout. That’s not to say I won’t, but I can deal with that when the time comes. I do occasionally get something that likes to dig holes on top of the layout, squirrels or something, but they get to the screen and that’s it. It’s easy enough to fix.

I am pleased with how it turned out. It’s a lot more reliable, so far, then when it was on the ground, and things that are operated manually, like switches, are easily accessible. The few, so far, that have come here to run on it, have had nothing but good things to say about it, so that’s a plus, too. And, the best part, 75% of it is in the shade…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Amazing work Ken! Love the turntable and many other details. I really like that you’re doing the signs.

More fun…

Thanks Sean, that’s much appreciated!

Dad not to jack up Kens thread but I REALLY,REALLY want to railfan your RR as well. Perhaps next year, don’t know.

Hey, Ken! Your railroad is…oh wait a minute…I have to pick up my socks…your railroad keeps knocking my socks off!!!..now where was I?..oh, yeah…your railroad is really, really, really, really, really cool! Did I mention that it is really cool?..oh, darn…there go my socks again!..

Thanks Mark, and if you ever get to the east side of the state you’re more then welcome to stop by and see it in person, with or without socks.

I still have a lot more to do on it, but it’s mostly the detail part so I can take my time with that.

Without the encouragement I’ve gotten by all you guys on LSC, this might never have seen the light of day.

Great pictures, Ken! Good looking train!

Hey, Ken Thanks so much for the invite. I have been wanting to venture to the east side of PA to visit the infamous Strasburg Raillroad Museum. Now, if I would have to choose between Strasburg or West Grove, I would have a difficult decision to make. Please keep those posts coming. I look forward to them with each log in… Mark

Shouldn’t be too hard a decision, Mark, since I’m less then an hour away from Strasburg. Kill 2 birds with one stone. Straight down Rt 896 to Rt 1 and I’m a mile up the road.

Some non-railroady items…

Got a drip irrigation system from Lowe’s. I’ll have watch the DVD that came with it to see how this thing goes together and what all the little pieces are.

I also stretched out the 1/2" tubing so it’ll somewhat lay flat.

And I noticed that the umbrellas were half price. So I picked up 2.

And some clamps to hold’em up…

Attached about a dozen in different areas, most at this end.

Ken,

When you install your new drip irrigation system for the layout, make sure you have a good filter on the line that is easy to get to. I have four separate circuits that each have their own filter and I need to clean them about once a month. Each circuit covers a quarter of the layout. Of course, I’m on a well with quite a bit of fine sediment, so if you’re on city water YMMV. Also, I found that each circuit required its own pressure regulator to get nice even flow throughout the lines without blowing out the closest emitters. I use combination 30 PSI regulators/filters that I got on Amazon. I run each circuit off of a 3/4" solenoid valve controlled by an automatic timer so I don’t have to remember to water.

See my earlier post for details and ideas. drip irrigation post

It doesn’t look like you need water here.

Now if only I could get that kind green where I want it, instead of the stuff that covers the rails.

I think that is where he takes his bathroom breaks Maynard
