Large Scale Central

A Raised Road Bed: A build log for the RGS raised layout.

While the weather is hot and muggy working on the Depot platform seemed a wise move…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

I added about 3" to both sides.

I also made up a few labels to identify the different sidings.

Ken,

Here I’ve been wracking my brain (such as it is) to come up with a method of identifying various car locations on the railroad and you’ve had the solution here all along. I really like your idea for labels on the benchwork. Silly me I thought they were merely tags for industries not yet built.

I do plan on stealing your idea quite unabashedly. You may expect royalty payments (not that you’ll ever get them). (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

Railroad keeps getting better every time I check.

I had made one up for inside the shed, just to identify what track was what. Seemed like a good idea for outside too. I had thought about putting a track diagram on there too, but decided just a list identifying them would be OK. Steal away, actually I’m flattered…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

If you notice in some of the pictures, little orange flags. I use them to keep cars from rolling out on the main. I had some 1 1/2" PVC conduit left from pulling up the old layout, and plan on making some holders out of them and attach them to the side of the layout to keep those flags in. Just to keep them out of the way and handy.

More dirt:

Then it rained…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Just beautiful Ken!

Thanks, Cliff.

Nice progress, Ken… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-sealed.gif)

Looking good Ken, what’s the track between the 2 small buildings? Is it a small point to point trolley service maybe.

That’s just extra track. Seemed a good spot to store it…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

We aren’t a tycoon like you Ken most of us are short on track and you have extra that you can store!

Looks great.

Rooster, oh, most of us are? Are we? Oh. So I shouldn’t talk about the abandon track that is slowly resurfacing on my railroad.

Ken, you ought to be real pleased. That’s a ton of great work you’ve done this summer. It really looks great. Now that you’ve had some plants on it for a while, do you find that you have to water a lot since things dry out fast being open air underneath?

I’m a little excited to think I might be a tycoon. I’ve got 400 feet of track still in boxes, but if I had my way it would all be on the ground right now.

Wow Ken its really coming along. At this rate you should be done with it before the snow starts falling. How does the dirt hold up when it rains? Any splashing on the buildings? I might have to do this when I get old like you

Yea, I have to water them everyday, but I would do that anyway since they’ve been replanted.

The dirt seems to have settled some since it was put on it, but I expected that and yea, it does splash on to the buildings.

You’re unstoppable Ken! I love the location under those trees too. That’s going to save you a few sun burns. I started to think “oh those pine needles will keep anything from growing” but it doesn’t look like your grass is having any problems. Why a temporary bridge around the bend? Will there eventually be a real bridge or more bench work? I guess I don’t need to tell you to keep up the good work.

The bridge will only be temporary till I decide what kind of bridge I’ll build for there, probably something that will lift out, to get the mower in there. I’m going to add about four more feet of bench work going to the left in that last picture to get out past the tree.

I’m liking the location too, because of the shade and no, it doesn’t stop the grass from growing under there, but it’s a bit thinner then the rest of the yard…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Aug 29, 2015 Update:

Temporary bridge in place
