If you heat the plastruct evenly with a heat gun (or blow torch from a distance) and let it cool it should naturally conform to that bow(angle)

Sorry, Dave, but something about Roosters playing with blow torches seems like a disaster in the making.

What about a cutting torch, plasma cutter, welder or better yet making doors or shutters on a portable router table with large stile and rail router bits.

Routers, doors, and shutters, okay. It was the combination of open flames and feathers that ignited my imagination!

Ok, how long do you heat styrene? I tried in the microwave and the oven and it did not work.

The project and the conversation, both can be enlightening and entertaining.

Ron, the microwave heats water molecules, so I wouldn’t even bother trying that on dry styrene.

When I bent styrene rod, I boiled a large pot of water, and then put the end if the rod into the boiling water for a minute or two. That made it soft enough to bend it around the wood dowel that I was using as a form. The time will vary depending on the thickness of the styrene. But to heat it over an open flame, like in an oven, could actually scorch the styrene, or make it burst into flames. Neither is (usually) desirable.

Maynard,

With all your experience and knowledge it it amazes me that you waste the amount of time you do on a train modeling board.

NASA needs guys like yourself!!

Sniff, sniff sniff. I smell sarcasm.

In the beginning maybe, but I believe you’ve reached; Sarchasm

That is coming along great Ken. You getting pretty good at this stuff.

Thanks, Shawn,

There’s a few on here that set a pretty high bar, not that I’ll ever catch up to them, but it’s fun tryin…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Haha im not sure Ken. I think your already at the high bar. I should be the one trying to catch up(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Rooster, I have known David a long time and have met him once. He has never failed to answer a question I have posed (with some sort of answer). I have never thought about his knowledge in that fashion. Maybe that is why I am in a train message board.

A bit more progress:

With most of the main roof done, it still needs to be painted.

I’ll work on the trim for the building next. Then get to the platform roof. It might even get done before summer gets here…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Looking good Ken. Saw snow on the morning news in the DC area, did you get it, also?

It IS snow…but it’s not on the roads or pavement. I’m sure people are already abandoning their cars, but there’s not even any on the roads in my 1:20 town. Of course school is delayed…

No snow here, thank goodness. They kept it in VA since they need the practice driving in it and plowing it,…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Something tells me all structures from hence forth will have a simple gable roof.

Depot looks great Ken, nice work.

Chris

Porch roof stuff.

First off, I cut the 4" conduit into quarters. Then glued a support on the curved roof sections. Clamped the roof piece to that. Then applied some heat.

After about 5 minutes, The plastruct stuff was sufficiently softened to conform to the curve. That’s the heat gun in the top left in the picture. Had to make a few passes with different heat settings before it finally looked like it was conforming. Then I applied Goop to the panel and used the 2 cut pieces of conduit to clamp it to the form.

This should work. I had almost forgotten about that heat gun. It’s comes with the soldering station. Adjustable speeds, adjustable heat temps, different nozzles sizes.

I used Evergreen Scale Models V-Groove siding, 1.0mm thick with 125" spaces. Then glued a 3 1/2" wide piece to the curved section and glued the roof panel to that. WE shall see how this works.

Ken, maybe you mentioned this earlier and I just missed it, but what solder station do you use? I see it in the picture, but can’t make out the make and model.

BTW: The depot looks great.

It’s an SMD rework station. I got it off Amazon for about $80. Comes with 6 different tips for the soldering gun and 4 different nozzles for the heat gun. Plus you can sett the velocity of the air, the temp, and set temp on the soldering gun. I like the soldering iron, and this was the first time I used the heat gun.

Someone on here had mentioned it a few years back so that’s when I looked into it.

Could have just used a piece of PVC crown/cove molding. I was hoping you were gonna get out a blow torch !
