A message from LGBoA

Hi all,

I’m probably going to duck after I post this, but it came my way and I thought I would pass it on. The staff of LGBoA got this yesterday.

Jack

Dear LGBoA Staff Members:

I have just returned from an unexpected but very positive trip to Nürnberg.

I met with top city, legal, banking and civic figures, and there is strong desire to get Lehmann back into production as quickly as possible. However, we are not waiting for action there. We are proceeding quickly with our own LGB production plans.

We will keep you informed and, while we are not making a formal public statement at this time, you may share this information.

Best regards,

David Buffington

And…They’re off…!!

What’s the matter Jack, no bravery in your soul…

Not with HJ roaming the halls

Lord, I’m getting dizzy!

I think I’ll go down into my messy shop.

Warren, I’m not a betting man, unless I’m absolutely dead certain. Anyway, back when LGB first produced that BLUE Krok - years before they and BEMO “sponsored” the repaint at the RhB - Dave Buffington was firmly convinced that a certain LGB customer in the UK would buy one of the blue LGB Kroks before the end of the year. So firmly convinced that I bet him a dollar that it wasn’t going to happen. All of that on the G Scale Group.  This is the Dollar with the cover letter from Dave Buffington.

It hangs suitable framed in my office. Daily reminder: never bet on anything unless you know what will happen. Same policy is still in place, I just wait till things come to pass.

Hey, a silver certificate! Those are pretty rare these days.

Ah, a Blue Croc.
Makes one wonder how many of those there actually are.

We’'l know when the red paint get’s knicked.

Dave,

There’s only one. And if/when the RhB repaints it, it will be back to brown, not red.

But there are possiblities, they could use the red snouts on a blue engine/cab section, then paint the roof white. Et voilà , you have an American Krok.
Would be a big seller!

It all sounds like a Kroc to me…

Personally I like it better than the brown. Perhaps they’ll decide to paint them all blue!

Warren,

You know the Germans have a very solid sense of humour, LGB produced blue Kroks on a lark. Next was BEMO with a Ge 4/4" in Blue (April Fool’s day stunt a few years ago), but BEMO and LGB are still waiting for RhB to follow suit.
If they’d be brave they’d approach RhB right now, pluck down the money and provide the correct paint; all this before RhB decides that “632” (the one that hit the rock slide) gets a new red paint job.

But the way things are going, you never can tell!

One of the “Vogel Family” has a tale of a Krok that tested on Conrail…I’ll let him tell the tale if he ever answers his email…!!!

Where are you, Carl, or whoever the brain trust is this week…!!!

Fr.Fred,

I’m well acquainted with the Vogel tale, has been posted numerous times.  As the Germans would say “Der hat wohl 'nen Vogel”.

I also have “Das Grosse Krokodil-Buch” (The Big Krok Book) in my library, but you know some people just don’t do the research in a thorough manner   :), alas no pictures or mention of the “notorious” Krok that roamed the Eastern USA. Pity!

Wasn’t there a sequel which had the blue Conrail Kroc shipped to Cuba?

Ferdo and Mass Liberals:

I’ve been awoken from my lurking nightmare to revive the unknown prototype. I have a picture at my home office of the PRR Kroc that was repainted from blue to Tuscan Red for night testing on the Philadelphia Main Line. The year was 1935-just before the Olympics.

Most of the testing took place at night between Paoli and Harrisburg, but some did run all the way through to 30th Street station. The average rider didn’t know the difference.

Seems that the articulation was superior to the Raymond Loewry graphics GG-1. However, high speed performance was less than optimal. Seems the voltage differences between what was required and what was provided caused the GG-1 to provide superior performance against the specs.

The blue krocs…now painted tuscan red…didn’t immediately go to Cuba. Rather, they boarded a ship near the Philadelphia Armory and State Street for South America. Seems that a mining venture of ore required non-diesel powerplants to haul ore cars up a torturous set of switchbacks. They ran well into the late 50’s. After languishing on a siding, a freighter took them to Cuba for eventual use on passenger service into Havana. Unfortunately, the communists provided little photographic evidence. I guess that they were probably a flat black or brown by this point.

Hope this helps.l

Naw, it doesn’t help. Having been a native to the Philly area and worked in the city quite a few years, I can think of no Armory near any docks or any State street in the City of Brotherly Love…must be more Commie propaganda…

Wait Ken!
The Frankford Arsenal was on State Road!

Yes…that’s the correct name. Down the street from Disson Hardware Co. They rails are supposedly still there 1/2 mile north of the Tacony Palymra Bridge.

Supposedly, the walls were several feet thick. The Pennsy had a direct line to those docks. during WWII, it was one busy place. by that time, though, the Krocs were forgotten lore in South America. Abandoned by both continents that had fed her electrical fires.

State Road and Frankford arsenal I’ve heard of…Philadelphia arsenal and State street is a horse( or Crock) of an entirely differant color…
