A good member and modeler has quit

Why do we need moderators as we are adults? Some people are adults in age only.

You want to leave because there are moderators? Well, if we are not doing a good enough job self-policing, then someone has to do it.

(please notice how many times I have gotten crap as the “forum police”, i.e. trying to be self-policing by peer pressure)

So there are some people who need control and we are not good enough ourselves and we don’t want any moderators?

You know of any forum that does not have a moderator?

I don’t see this position as a solution to the problems.

Let’s focus on solving the problem with solutions that can work.

Greg

maybe we should bring back the

TAR and FEATHERS thing ?

Kinda tough shoving feathers thru a modem…

I don’t see a problem with moderators per say, but it depends how it’s handled. One site I know went to moderators but they went way overboard editing or deleting innocuous posts on the grounds that they might offend someone, who that was wasn’t really explained.

It slowed activities badly until more moderate moderators were brought on or the original mods learned to calm the heck down. Now that site is OK. All big sites have mods, its the only way to keep watch on things 24/7/365.

Maybe its time to acknowledge that LSC is no longer a funky little site anymore, its a goodly sized site nowadays. Especially since LSOL demise and MLSs sale. Using a small number of moderators would ease Bobs burden but it would also signal that the site is changing into something larger.

Perhaps the solution is to not take offense where no offense was intended.

I can only imagine the number of back-channel emails that Bob has to field from thin-skinned folks, probably most of whom only lurk here, or post once or twice a year.

If you take offense at something someone has said, put on your big boy pants, send PM to that individual, and settle it between the two of you. Don’t bother Bob with something you, as an adult, should be able to handle, and, likewise, don’t start a flame war in the threads. Go back channel, that is why it is there.

Forums are an online “community”.
Just as any other form of community, there will be disagreements among good people how the community is run.
If there are changes made, it will be up to each individual to decide whether to accept the changes and remain a member of the community.

As for “editing” posts, there have been posts removed in the past. It is not a frequent occurrence.
Yes, you have free speech. You can say what ever you want.
But should Bob decide that what you’ve written on the “wall” of his “living room” needs to be removed,
I accept that as his right.
Ralph

Again to repeat what I said earlier, I suggested adding moderators that EXACTLY MIRROR Bob’s desires for the forum. It might take a while to get this right, but it’s completely under Bob’s control, and people DO exist that can take direction and are willing to volunteer their time.

The suggestions to attempt to work it out between the individuals is great, and has always been encouraged, but in reality, there are a lot of people who “talk” on the forum in a way they would never do in person, so those people are unlikely to work things out with others.

I had an “online altercation” with an individual a while back, and when I went to a train show where this individual was, I was FULLY prepared for a real, physical fight… instead he greeted me nicely, spoke to me civilly… then of course after the show, online he went back to his combative state. So my point is here that while we can state how we believe people should behave, it won’t always work.

So, I hope Bob can embrace a solution that keeps the forum the way he wants and we can all still have this great source of information and sharing.

I came to this site to enjoy trains. Yes there are folks in every group that like to stand on folks toes. Well as I’ve always said life is to,short to deal with those folks and I keep on trucking. I could care less what they say or think if that’s there attitude. The only way I’d leave this site is If got band. And then I probably would have deserved it. I think Bob does a terrific job here and handles it quite well without help. Later RJD

Well folks, Bob has made his decision, posted on the ‘Future of LSC’ thread. I think it would be nice if we would all accept our gracious host’s decision, stop beating a dead horse and move forward with out favorite hobby - TRAINS. I also think we should all give Bob an overwhelming 'Thank you for your efforts on our behalf and tolerance of our shortcomings;.

Yes Bob (#7),

Leaving aside all other matters, in my opinion it wouldn’t hurt if everyone of us would read this post just once a day.

As a little reminder — every day! There would be a lot less bickering and thread drift.

Dave M: Thanks for back-channeling me about all this. I was unaware of what had happened and am still stunned by the news. I have just posted the following statement on Boomer’s build log:

“I have just learned about this stunning and sad development. I too admired Boomer’s work and was looking forward to seeing how his latest build would work out. I also enjoyed the ongoing banter from Vic and some of the other guys here. Boomer has been a great contributor to the fun around LSC; I am mortified that I will be connected to his leaving; and I add my name to the list of those who are encouraging him to return.”

I know it’s all too little, too late. Like most members here I am ordinarily very careful not to give offense in what I post online, and by now I should think others will have noticed that.

But it seems this time I must have let my guard down, or despite myself was somehow insensitive to Boomer’s feelings. I have been unwell lately, I’ve had some difficulty concentrating, and maybe that had some part to play in all this.

Boomer let me know by PM that he was ticked. His response seemed to me to be hyper-sensitive. On his build log I twice attempted to lighten it up. I tried to make it very clear that he had my goodwill. I do not know just why he reacted as he did, and in the end only he will be able to explain it.

Needless to say, I am very sorry about this whole mess.

I take John at his word. John has shared with me the nature of his illness, and when he says that he has been unwell, he is making light of his situation. To say that his concentration was affected is a bit of an understatement.

John Like I said, I’ve never known you to give intentional offense, but correcting the wrong helps. Sorry to hear of the bad health, I hope you are getting better

And apologizing does follow the “new rules” given by Bob.

We all have to remember that not everyone will interpret our written word the way the author does, and there’s no “tone”, cadence or inflection in the written word.
