A dismal day

So yesterday I had a day with the dismals. . . I mean diesels. I know I give te dino burners a hard time but I secretly have an obsession with the local short line St. Maries River Railroad. They haul lumber from three mills in St Maries Idaho to Plummer Idaho and a connection with UP. They use three GP-9 low hoods as prime movers and a sw1200 for yard work and running to the mills. The also have a yard full of interesting MOW equipment. As long as you check in with the station they generally are pretty nice about letting you walk around and look at what they have. So my day started out drive the hour drive down to St Maries. Along the way I saw several herds of Elk, always a pleasure.

The day stayed foggy so pictures are not the best. Once at the yard I walked around and took pictres of the equipment. I am doing a static display of the yard in HO. Here are a few of my favorite pieces.

The Station

Bay Window Ribe sided Caboose

Jordon Spreader

Flanger

After hooking up to the consist the switcher made up 103 and 102 (two of the GP9s) took off for Plummer

Coming throught the tunnel at Benewah Lake

Coming into the Plummer Wye

Making the Excahnge with UP at the Wye. STMA disconnects from the train and rns up one leg of the why and attaches to the empties brought in by UP. Meanwhile UP backs down with it load it picked up in Plummer on another leg and connects to the load from STMA. Then they pull out and STMA switches egines and runs bac to ST Maries.

Very cool Devon, thank you for sharing.

John,

Interesting coincidence. I see your badge is from the McCloud River Railway in CA. Well you might recoginize this

Yesterday I got to see the new purchases that STMA made; they got 5 of these. They are hoping to use them as excursion/dinner trains to run up the larkia branch here the Log yard that they hauled from is. Very pretty run through up the St Maries River.

How about this

looks OK?

Much better, I need photoshop. I use the MS Office one and can’t seem to get very good results. That looks much better.

Tat looks alot better. I need photoshop. Theonly photo manipulation program I have is MS Office picture viewer and I can not get very good results with it.

Devon, thank you for the photos of the McCloud River Railway cars. Jeff tried his best to make that work, only road it once. Fortunately I was able to score a cab ride at a whooping 12mph!

It a tough business these short lines. Hopefully they can make this work. Over the years since its beginning in 1980 after the Milwaulkee left it has gradually gotten smaller and smaller. Thats whyI want to make sure I have plenty of pictures. In all likely hood they will be a look into the past.

This looks like it was rode hard and put up wet.

Ahh, yes, the former MILW line out of St Maries, through Bovil and on to Elk River. That’s a good line to model. My WI&M interchanged with the MILW at Bovil.

Devon,

I use the Fast stone image viewer, it’s a free download and you can edit and size your pics before you upload 'em. There are others if you look.

David,

That flanger and the Jordan Spreader are my favorite pieces, and both look like a hammered pile of dog pooh. The Jordan Spreader I have a kit for but the above flanger will be a scratch build probably out of a rib side caboose. Then let the weathering begin.

I have in the past used some pretty decent free photo editing programs and just haven’t bothered with the new computer. I just want photoshop and need to break down and buy it. I take enough pictures to warrant it.

Dave,

here is a shot of the front of that flanger

here is the monster blade on that Jordan spreader

And another piece I like is the 10,000 fire fighting tanker.

Nice photos of some cool equipment Devon.

The Saint Marie River RR colour scheme reminds me of a State of Maine boxcar with the blue white and red.

Devon, I use Photoshop Elements. Its less expensive then the full blown Photoshop, and it does all I need to do. I got version 4 after version 5 had come out, so it was in the clearance section. Yes, I am a cheep bas person

Yeah I just learned about the elements version. I will likely go with that. I know a few people who use it much in the manor I would and they have no issues. Plus it works with Adobe Illustrator which is another program I would like to use.

You can download the entire CS2 suite for free from Adobe with the license…

Photoshop, Illustrator, the whole shebang… (they got tired of people hacking the license and then asking for support)

Greg

the problem with older versions is RAW support.
