Large Scale Central

A building in the Nashoba Valley

When I attended TrainOps this year, I managed to talk Bob into allowing me to make a building. At the Invasion, Fred had given me a clear acrylic cube that measured 1 foot on each side. I thought it might make a good start for a building.

But, first, I had to come up with a plan.

Oops. Not THAT one again.

I didn’t have a napkin handy so I got out a small sheet of paper to make a detailed plan.

OK…a bit more detail than necessary, but I think it could work.

Of course all plans are subject to change when building. I started by drawing some lines on the cube.

I liked the look of Bob’s coaling tower, with the brick inset into concrete, so I’m going with that look. I’ll use 6 mm foamed PVC for the concrete. The brick will be put on top of some 3 mm sheet.

First, I make some corners out of the 6mm stuff. They are each a scale foot wide. I glued them in place and put some weights to hold them until dry.

Next, I built a loading dock and glued it to the building.

Then, some more concrete strips. I was originally thinking of a small addition out the side, but I’m thinking I may just go with this look. I was thinking a 1 story cube glued to it, but I’m not sure I like that idea. Either way, I’ll have to add a door somewhere…

Anyway, there’s plenty of time to decide.

Ah ha… A fish tank store… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Your detailed drawing has a flaw that is under review by the Historical Architectural Review Board (HARB). They would like to know why you have 3 4 pane windows and one 6 pane window on the same side of the structure. You need to prove that it’s architecturally correct before proceeding.

HA HA Andy a fish tank store !

OR a new design for a GOOGLE or APPLE store.

Pet rock store!

No, It’s a hangar for Wonder Woman’s plane.

Oh, and by rule it must include a proper glonkulator! (A.K.A. gronkulator)

The box the Dalek came in?

Now this makes sense.

The box the Dalek came in?

While Ray is doing fantastically detailed carving, I’m making el cheapo windows: hardware cloth framed with .100" angle and painted black. (With a few commercial castings thrown in.)

Those hardware cloth windows look great!

I agree they look sharp and functional!

PS. There can be only one Ray!

Starting to look more like a building. I used a lot of scraps of 3mm pvc to fill around the windows. This will all be covered with Precision Products brick.

Another scrap of styrene forms the roof for the loading dock.

I’m just in the middle of finishing up the trim on the roof. The windows are just taped in place, so I know which one goes where - they’re not quite all identical.

Very nice, I just love the creative use of stuff.

Why the Precision Products brick? I kinda thought you were sold on the Plastruct brick sheets.

When ya gonna make me one? Huh? …(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Building is coming along nicely, Bruce… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

I did like the Plastruct brick sheets, until I put them outside. I’ve experienced a LOT of bubbling, so I’m back to using Precision Products. Never had any problems with them.

What do you want built? Got any scraps? (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

I run into that with just about everything outside, plus the PP stuff gets brittle. Don’t know if it’s the cold weather or the UV that does that.

Just kiddin about the building, I gotta move a bunch from the old layout yet. Ain’t no room on the new one for’em…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif).

Yeah, I’m sort of filling up on buildings as well. Got a few ideas left…but not a lot of room.

Some progress…

I started cutting up the brick sheets and putting them over the 3mm PVC. Instead of cutting holes for the windows, I’m just cutting brick sheet to fit around them. I think this ends up using fewer brick sheets.

I’ve covered the loading dock roof with galvanized metal. Also painted the brick to see how it would look. Still need to spray with a clear coat to seal the mortar in place.

Looks good, Bruce… I see the employee’s opened the second story back window for some fresh air… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-sealed.gif)
