A Brass Critter

Not to take away from the second one, but there really is a lot of very nice visible detail on that first one, Bruce, and excellent lettering too. I know which one I’d be stealing ideas off! I think either color on the roof would work equally well.
For what it’s worth, I just visited your site and looked at your green boxcab. As I think about it, I believe that for my taste anyway, a contrasting roof color would have worked a bit better than the green. I’d have gone for black top surfaces and green detailing.
Don’t hate me…
Prior to deciding on paint schemes, Now we have computers I have taken to creating b/w drawings of my stuff and then ‘painting them’ onscreen to get a bunch of ideas to look at. I find this exercise really helps me visualize a bunch of different possibilities.
The only problem then is choosing among a plethora of schemes that all look good to me!
I try to get around this dilemma by sticking close to a family look, which means that a whole lot of my beautiful schemes get scrapped. Yup, that hurts…

And, not to take away from any of your points, there’s not a lot of detail on the prototype, either.

I’m still deciding…

Go with green to match the bigger one!

Better yet would be polished brass…now that would be cool!

I agree with Rooster…same company same paint can…

Nah, paint it yellow and make it a maintenance of way lokey, to small for mainline service!

"I’m hopin Gary brings that up to Fred’s one of these years. "

I agree! Those are cool. If not Fred’s, York?

Why not both? The Drag and Brag to show it off, and then to the IPP&W to let 'er rip! (And show off some more!)

True!

Yes…and we want pictures because he should be retired by then!

Polish it Bruce and call it your OCS train! With a black roof and undercarriage

OCS? Heh…I’m USMA

I doubt Rooster knows what that means…

Got the rest of the grab irons in place, along with some bars across the top - just barely visible here.

I figure they will help support the roof after I cut it to shape; that piece of brass in the background will end up being soldered on top.

Here’s a couple of shots of the body just setting up on the chassis…just to see how it will look.

Eventually, I’ll be drilling some holes from underneath and tapping them to allow screws to hold the chassis to the body.

Dang, Bruce, that’s looking great.

Did you decide on a color yet?
Just wanted to know what I should be expecting when you send it to me…

Awesome!

Bruce,

That is really coming along.

You have to be pleased with the results.

A#1 looking good

Bruce,

Most interesting model and thread. Really appreciate your work and talent.

Have you tried painting a test of something you’ve handled and soldered on?

I’ve always been shy of that art of painting brass, other than handrails and the bigger the area seems more daunting. Seal? Prime? How to prep? Wash? Solvents?

Lots of questions. Or rattle can from WalMart and see what happens.

Ric,

That’s one of the great unknowns at this point - painting brass, that is. (Still wondering about my soldering ability, but that’s another story.)

I do have these tips on painting brass from ScaleCoat Paints - http://www.weavermodels.com/page12.html

And I do have some of their paint as well.

However, I’m still thinking of priming - or at least using gray primer to cover the inside walls.

Interesting?? My experience with scale coat was the opposite of what they recommend. I found that it dried and cured in the cold ?? (yes I know)

When I painted the brass chassis of Utility I just used a Krylon rattle can with no issues. I still think you should polish it!
