A Brass Critter

Bruce,

For the wipers, with your talent use Gary’s picture and very small angle brass for blade with brass wire for the arm. 90 degree angle at top and hole in body. Think it will be solid and made by you.

If you mess up a set, I could use them out of brass for some of my styrene stuff.

Hey, that’s a good idea, Ric. I do have some 1/32" angle…that could work.

Yeah, I’ve got pictures of your critter as well as Gary’s…I keep studying them as well as the prototype.

My LGB Critter/powered tender needs a windshield wiper, just one.

Boxcabs had wipers?

Well, maybe not plural…but at least one?

Are those (that) wiper vacuum, electric or hand crank operated?

Like the original Jeep. Hand operated with bracket through top of the windshield. Yuh got to be able to get the bird poop off some how.

Not track wipers!

Not a good day to work outside, so I thought it might be a good time to do a bit of work on this.

First up was to solder some 1/8" bars along the sides. This will make it a bit easier to solder the ends on later.

You can see the bars on the side piece standing up.

I also soldered some 1/4" brass strips to another piece of brass to make the door.

Right now there’s some angle pieces around the door that keep it from falling in. I haven’t yet decided exactly how I’ll fasten it, as I want it to be removable for access to the battery. I’m leaning towards some magnets.

So this will be the locomotive you will be sending to my house so I can… um… review it?

All the doors are done. I added some handrails to each side.

Next up, I need to create a way to hold the window glazing in place. I think I’ll have to place the glazing from the inside bottom, as the roof will probably be in place once I paint this.

I haven’t quite figured out the best way yet.

Do they make Z Chanel in brass? If so you could make an open bottom frame inside the shell for the windows, then glue them in from the bottom after painting. A bead of hot glue or silicone along the bottom should hold the glazing in.

Jon, yes they DO make Z in brass - and I ordered some from Plastruct - of all places! But, it’s just not the right size. I’m thinking of using some other bar stock I have. Either way, it’s not real pretty.

But, I’m thinking along your lines - put in a piece after painting to finish it off.

Heh. We’ll see.

Looking good so far!

Make it a summer time box cab, remove all the windows and put them in the cab. Hey if you don’t have windows then you don’t need wipers either.

I was trying to solder some window holders in place, but that really didn’t work out, so I’m just going to glue the windows in after I paint it.

In the meantime, I have soldered the four walls together.

The doors are just taped in place. They well be removable for access to the battery.

All this solderin…you could take up part time plumbin…

What color are you plannin on?

You’d think that with all this soldering, I’d be learning more. But, I keep forgetting how powerful this resistance unit is. I’ve destroyed several pieces of trim already by having the power set too high.

As far as colors go, right now I’m thinking of a black frame and under body, with yellow cab.

After all, that’s what some of the other great models are painted.

I’m just not sure if I’ll paint the roof black, or yellow…

Not to take away from the second one, but there really is a lot of very nice visible detail on that first one, Bruce, and excellent lettering too. I know which one I’d be stealing ideas off! I think either color on the roof would work equally well.
For what it’s worth, I just visited your site and looked at your green boxcab. As I think about it, I believe that for my taste anyway, a contrasting roof color would have worked a bit better than the green. I’d have gone for black top surfaces and green detailing.
Don’t hate me…
Prior to deciding on paint schemes, Now we have computers I have taken to creating b/w drawings of my stuff and then ‘painting them’ onscreen to get a bunch of ideas to look at. I find this exercise really helps me visualize a bunch of different possibilities.
The only problem then is choosing among a plethora of schemes that all look good to me!
I try to get around this dilemma by sticking close to a family look, which means that a whole lot of my beautiful schemes get scrapped. Yup, that hurts…

There’s probably a lot of “Ins” and “Outs” to resistance soldering. Just takes practice.

I’m hopin Gary brings that up to Fred’s one of these years.

I know of a pretty good one that’s painted green…besides, then they’ll match…
