A boxcar and covered hopper build

Lettering on the hoppers is now complete.Decals took a couple of tries. I did learn that print size between different printers is not the same, which made me redo the artwork once.

A comparison shot with an Aristo hopper.

Now I get to learn how to do the decals for the boxcars.

Hollywood,
Looks good. Did you print the decals with an inkjet?
Ralph

Ralph,thank you
No I wound up using an HP laser printer. I was having problems getting a clean print from the inkjet printer we have, and the laser printer was on sale.I also changed to a better print program.
The program change helped with most of the ghost print I was getting with the inkjet printer. The laser printer cleared up all of the ghost image, but the image size was larger when printed on the laser printer.
So I had to redo all the artwork in a smaller size in the computer , before I could print the decals on the laser printer.

The print program i used was GIMP. which is freeware. My son has sent me a link to another freeware print program that I think is inkscape, but Iā€™m not certain and I havenā€™t tried it yet. But, he says itā€™s better for this kind of work than Gimp.

Hollywood,
Just be careful using the waterslide paper with the laser. I totally mucked up a $500 color laser printer when the paper jammed.
It overheated, and that was the end of it :open_mouth:
I have a new color laser now, but havenā€™t had the nerve to try printing decals again.

Any updates?

Boxcar decals have been printed John. I hope to be able to apply them this weekend. If the weather holds Iā€™ll be able to decal the boxcars and get a clear overspray on them and the last hopper.

And decals have been applied:

Finally finishes this build.

Great build Hollywood! Turned out wonderful. But on a more important point, Rooster canā€™t say ā€˜Is it done yet?ā€™

Fantastic, great build log. I really appreciate your sharing.

Nice work Hollywood

Hollywood,
All thatā€™s left now is a picture of the consist out on the rails
Fine job !
Ralph

Lesseeā€¦how much longer can we get this thread to go on? Decals are horribleā€¦you should just scrap all the cars and start overā€¦see thereā€¦that should be good for another 10 pages!

......

You gonna use Solvaset on those decals?

Why did you decide to use truck mounted couplers?

Why Aristo Couplers and not Kadees or Accucraft?

Did you get a good deal or sumpin?

Iā€™ve done my part, Bart. Those questions should be good for a few pagesā€¦ :stuck_out_tongue:

BTW, I am impressed with your craftsmanship.

How come you didnā€™t match the paint to the decals?

Are you going to weather them?

yes Steve. That pic was taken while the decals were still wet.
