Daaaaaym, thats nice looking! Good job
Sweet! I like the realistic ripples in the sheet metal.
Ray Dunakin said:Exactly! I was going to ask how the heck you did that until I re-read the post and saw Resin.

Being curious myself, I went back in search of the original method used to create those panels. Aluminum foil tape, but taped just along the edges (under the ribs), on a sheet of styrene that is ever-so-slightly bent. When the sheet is relaxed to be flat, the tape bunches up to create that effect. Damned ingenious, if you ask me.
Here’s a link to how it was done:

I too am amazed by the ripple detail. Once you get some weathering on that it will be hard to distinguish from the real thing
Wow that’s an awesome model, Burl do the resin kits for a living or part of the hobby and offers it?
Mark,
Burl regularly posts on MLS. If able to, then do a search on MLS for member threads.
Mark, I think it’s mostly a part time venture. He does have a series of kits he offers…but I also think he has a real full time job too.
thats some amazing work, only if aristo or usa could be that inovative and got their butts moving with some modern stuff that is affordable. I mean that kits awesome but the price tag! I know i know, it’s an expensive hobby… blah blah blah
I’ve molded and cast part for my Vietnam Gun Truck models, it takes a LOT of work and materials that are not cheap to do it. Pricey-yes, but it’s what you need to keep doing it. You have to keep remaking the molds also, another added expense.
Jerry
Yea, casting is a bit of work, but its worth it. Even something as small as the poling pockets that I did took about 4 iterations, and 3 recasts to get right. The final results are worth it, but you do have to recover some of your “R&D” costs. Thinking back, I think those took me about 6 hours total work to get the final finished product.
Geez…where have I been? Well, I’ll tell ya…in the basement working on some more of Burl’s kits.
I finished the NW and then built the MP car. As for the cost…considering the detail and all I think they are a steal. These ended up costing about $200.00 each once everything was said and done. That’s about 3 time the cost of a USA trains 50’ boxcar. I could have scratched them myself but the cost in time would have been outrageous. Another shot of the MP car
I am currently waiting on decals for my next kit car…his 60’ Hycube Berwick built waffle side boxcar. One of the neat things is I now have some cars nobody else has (I know cuz I did the decal artwork myself). I’ll post pictures of the next car in the future. Take care, Brian B.
I said it before, and Ill say it about the red one, as well. VERY nice…
Brian, those two cars are superb!
Brian. I have been looking at this thread, since you started it, and let me say, I think that both cars are suberbly done, your workmanship is to be commended… A fantastic pair of freight cars…
There is, however one thing that baffles me some, on the MP car… That thing, is the placement of the brake wheel… Maybe I just don’t know enough about these freight cars, but from the picture, it would appear to me, that the door would take off the brake wheel, when the door is opened… If you, or someone else could enlighten me, I sure would appreciate it…
Again, like I said, great job on both freight cars…
Andy, it’s possible the door operates like a plug door and lifts out before sliding back…thus passing over the wheel.
What I like most about these is the rippled steel sheet metal surface, extremely realistic, cant do that in HO.
I think Warren is correct about the door, plus on the real car the brake wheel might be mounted closer to the body than the model shows.
Great looking kits
