Large Scale Central

60' box nearing completion

Yes, the doors on those cars are Plug doors.

I’m certainly no expert on these cars, but I don’t think that is a brake wheel. If you look closely, there is a ‘track’ just above the wheel. I believe that track piece has linear gear teeth (a ‘rack’) that are engaged on a pinion gear on the wheel. The wheel is attached to the door and the whole mechanism provides a means for a single individual to get that huge door open / closed. One question I have is whether the door opening mechanism actually works. I’m certain Brian or someone with more specific knowledge will drop by and further explain this.

These are really unique models, beautiful done and a real stunner on any modern times model RR. Very well done!!

Happy RRing,

Jerry

Thanks Guys!, Jerry is correct about the door, it’s a standard slider but since it’s huge some railroads decide that it would need an assist mechanism. The brakewheel device is a geared box that travels along the rack strap as you spin the wheel. Here’s a picture I took of one years ago…the little sign says “This car equipped with special door opening device. Open and close only with wheel”

Unfortunately mine doesn’t work…but looks like it could  Warren, can I get you a bib? Brian B.

Here’s a teaser of the next boxcar…the decals are in the mail! I’ll have this one done this weekend if I get the decals by Saturday.

This one is going to be Conrail. Brian B.

If I was modeling modern mainline, I’d definitely have a couple of these kits.

Brian, thanks for posting the picture showing the mechanism…

And they say an ““ole dawg”” can’t learn new things… Appreciate everyone else’s explaination… Learn new things every day…

And like I said earlier, great job…
