My town is full of row homes …why not rear balconies, porches, or little one (or two) story additions for the back. That’s what I see when I drive up the back streets in town.
Not necessarily fire escapes but covered or open stairways for access to 2nd floor apartments, bilco type doors for basement access or coal delivery, small loading docks, garage doors and like Dave said, little lean-too like additions to the back. Most of those row type commercial areas had alleys behind them for delivery vehicles and such.
Love the middle building. Kind of has that French Quarter look to it.
I think I went overboard adding styrene strips to this. I doubt I’ll notice much of the detail once it is outside, but it’s still fun doing it.

Of course the multicolor sort of detracts from the whole thing, so I decided to go ahead and spray it with some primer.
I’d have kept the red brick on the sides. The red on the top I would have made the same color as the rest of it. But it’s doesn’t look “overboard” to me. Looks like a typical early 20th century store front. Nice!

The bricks will be red again, eventually. I need to head over to Home Depot and get some paint.
Except for the bricks, this will be painted all metallic, so as to resemble a Mesker type front.
Glued the other two walls in place. I squared off a few of the cut outs from the windows and used them to reinforce the corners.

It’s not yet glued to the base underneath.
Fine work on that front wall
I continue to work on the front wall before I glue it in place.
I headed over to Home Depot and got some paint that I think will work. I added a bunch of strips and other stuff to the rightmost shop. I put the first coat of paint on it; I think it will work.

And an overview of progress
I like the curtains…
Nice going, Bruce.
Lookin’ very fine!
Can we move in yet? Looking great.
Looking real good Bruce!
Bruce this is great stuff you have going here. The windows are fantastic, the coloring is just exactly right and believable to me, obviously the craftsmanship is there. Very cool. I can’t wait to try my hand and something like this and use your build as an example.
Thanks guys. This is a fun project.
I get lots of inspiration from actual buildings. This one was inspired by a building in Leesburg, VA, not too far from me.

When I say inspired, I mean I don’t try to make an accurate copy of the building, but I use ideas from it. In this case, I really liked the bottom windows and wanted to incorporate them in my model. The rest was done from parts on hand.
Looks good. I love the color so far.
Looks-a pretty nice-a, Bruce. Them are buildings to be proud of, or of which to be proud or sumthin.’
It looks awesome, Bruce!
Everybody has said it all before me. But, I have to say, " I am really impressed."
You guys set a high bench mark for the rest of us to follow.
