2021MIK Feed Truck

Sorry to hear about the set-back! Looking forward to watching you bring the truck to completion all the same. This has been a very educational thread.

I will get it done and keep posting pictures. I think the biggest mental setback was when I had to strip the primer all off. And in the process, almost all the details came off, or broke. Then, somehow the entire frame of the truck became unglued from the tank body. It actually might be a blessing because now I can paint and weather the frame and cab exclusive of the tank, then glue the whole tank on. As Devon says, I’m to critical of a modeler, so sometimes it’s easier just to start all over and rebuild than try and fix.

It’s so much easier the second time around… Look in 2 minutes I went from a bare PVC pipe to this.

Oh wait that was a month ago.

So in a weird twist of fate and desire for more information.

I have been on conversation with the Redmond Historical Society and the archives just send me a copy of an interview with the former feed mill manager. He talks about the delivery trucks and how they had both 12 and 21 tons trucks… The 12 ton trucks had 4 3 ton sections.

How many sections did I make on the first one? 5. You know what would have drove me nuts? Now knowing the smaller trucks had 4 sections.

I know, I know…

Chatting with Pete and he gave me some inside scoops on truck weights.

I had to make sense of this.

22,000 lbs plus about 18,000 for the rare weight of the truck , it wouldn’t need a pusher axle, 42,000+ 18,000 would be in the range of a 3 axle with a pusher axle, 3 axles can do 54,000 so the pusher would be right, the trailers would be light weight so a track and the trailer would be mid to high 20,000 rare so probably up to 48-50,000 lb loads. My guesses anyway

To which I replied.

You’re making me do math… 48,000 is 24 tons. Now the interview said the smaller trucks were 12 tons or 24,000 pounds with 4 compartments at 3 tons each. So if I use 3 tons as the average size, that puts it to 7 compartments on the truck @21 tons. Or 3 compartments at 7 tons each. I’m guessing feed cubes out before weighting out. Now I’ve got to figure out the cubic volume of a 25’ tank and see if it’s close.

A 3" pvc pipe is about 7’ scale. So a cubic volume of a cylinder 25 x7 is 925 cubic feet

Which fits into the upper end of the feed mill trucks that I’ve found online. Fhew. All this to say 25’ tank is about right.

Now I started researching feed trucks and found that the larger trucks are 24’-26’ in length with about 3’ from the rear of the tank to the rear of the frame. Measured mine, 3’ on the dot with a 25’ tank.

Now I just have figure if I want to make 3 compartments of 7 tons each or 7 compartments of 3 tons each using the information I gleaned about the 12 ton trucks… The challenge starts this month, right?

Well I think I’ve got the frame well and done.

The tank is the ruined tank/mockup.

The drop axle is high enough to look right and not look like someone forgot to level the truck when adding the tires.

And enough detail to suggest what’s there without having to actually build everything.

This is definitely a quick build, not too detailed model, but that said it does a decent job of representing the truck.

Sorry about the tank. But the truck is coming out nice.

Thankfully 3" PVC is readily available in this shop… I originally bought it to build silos for the feed mill, or at least some of the smaller ones. And should I need another roofwalk, I can just go grab one off the fleet ( 80% of the rolling stock in the early 70s had roofwalks removed). Maybe I’ll pull off a MIK miracle this weekend?

Not the best pictures, but you get the idea…

I originally thought that these would be big enough for the tanks out front of the building, but they are a bit larger so when I get to that I’ll have to find some 4" or 5" pipe. I’ve got 8" and 14" pipe standing around still waiting for projects…

14" pipe makes exceptional tunnel liners…

I had plans at one point to build a 8’ tall grain elevator… I recall the conversation when I showed up to the industrial supply house and asked if they had smooth walled PVC in 14" or bigger. And the counter guy says, yes how many.

“Just 2” and the gave me this weird look until I explained it was for a garden railroad. It was shortly after this that I realized I wanted a prototype based layout not a freelanced layout.

Craig as for all the help I have given you … I can see why the one guy said he has given you enough information for now !!!LOL Its really looking good , hope you get it finished or at least mocked up to see what the final version will be. Glad I could use some of the useless information I have for a change . I am really impressed with your attention to and stickler for detail. good job!

Oh I will finish it. Just depends on how long it takes…

I’ve got a few more details to build as sub assemblies for the frame ( exhaust system) and then cab details as well. Once those are done, the tank is pretty much the only thing left. I’ve got to figure out if the mud flaps are attached to the frame or the thin sheeting they runs along the tank.

Decals get mailed out tomorrow! It took a while but I’ve got what I think looks like a good paint scheme, schemed up.

I’ve also got another pickup truck halfway built as well that I’m trying to finish up as well. That one is getting another coat of paint and a working tailgate. That should also be fairly easy to finish up in a few days/hours. Then I think I’m setting aside vehicle building for a while to focus on the layout.

You know what’s fun about kitbashing, Craig said ironically…

What’s that you ask?

Oh the ability to take kit parts and make them that much better. Stryene tube and brass tubing vs the kit.

You know what the annoying thing about kitbashing is?

What’s that Craig?

That the parts don’t fit like they are supposed to. I’m not sure what the exhaust pipe looks like coming from the block but the kit provided an exhaust pipe that was a: for the kit frame width, and b: extended past the sleeper cab. Since smarty pants Craig kept the frame width similar one would think it should work with just a few pieces removed. Nah. Time to anneal some brass and bend some exhaust pipes for no reason other than to make it look like the exhaust pipes actually exist and exit the block…

Lol,

Yeah been there done that

I know for sure that I won’t finish this by tonight, but that’s okay. The next unofficial deadline will be the potential ‘online drag & brag’ event.

I painted and masked the cab. My masking skills need some improvement, but I think once it’s weathered nicely it will be okay. I didn’t get nearly the same amount of bleed through that I’ve gotten in the past thanks to a trick I learned. After masking, spray the base coat over the edges of the mask to seal any missed gaps. Let that dry and then paint the top coat. If paint bleeds through the mask it will be the right color of bleeding, not the wrong color. I brush painted the window ledges/seals black along with the window wipers. I’m not a brush painter. If I was thinking, I should have practiced spraying a thin line with my airbrush and airbrushed at least the window seals. I don’t think I have the skills yet to airbrush the window wipers. A good truck modeler would have sanded off this molded wipers of and replaced them with fine wire.

After studying the prototype photo more, I originally though the rims and the gas tanks where polished aluminum, but its not the same color as the feed tank. So I think I’m going to go with white fuel tanks, and white rims.

How about that last detail that nobody has done yet just to set your build apart from all the other trucks out there.

Well considering it doesn’t ever get that cold in western Wa, I’ve hardly seen a truck like that ever here.

I’m now thinking that the stripe might be a tad too wide. Debating on if I want to narrow that down. It wouldn’t be too hard.

Of course 24 hours after the MIK challenge officially ends, I get the decals. It kinda blows the $30 limit out the window but if I price it per decal…

One good thing, I can show off the half completed model to Devon before he gets sliced and diced open.
