2021 Mik build Jim Rowson - Backwoods moonshine still

Dang, Jim that’s a complete diorama. Great job!! I especially like the use, again, of natural materials. Brings authenticity to the scene.

Dan: in all the pictures of stills I have looked at, none of them show a way to add mash or clean the still. Maybe ask Devon’s anonymous friend? Or maybe the access is on the hidden side of the still. Yeah, that’s it…

when i was a little boy, my father had a “camouflaged” still in the cellar. (he is long gone, so no harm in telling)

it was a (then) modern installed washing kettle. with its own firing hole below the kettle and a brickwall around it. the kettle itself must have been between 2 and 3 ft. in diameter and about the same in hight. for the little boy i was, the thing looked huge.

for cooking laundry it had a normal cookingpot type lid. for destilling he had a second lid, lightly domed with clamps to fasten it to the kettle as well as clamps to fix a copperpipe spiral.

that lid was normally upon the rainwaterbarrel.

so the whole thing had an ample access for filling and cleaning.

Cool story, Korm!

As close as Dan’s watching this build I think he’s setting up to make his own hooch in the back yard Jim (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Nah, its a PIA (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)I’d rather buy the good stuff (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Got some bits and pieces 3D printed. Hooch jug is a design from thingiverse, other stuff is graciously shared by Dennis Rayon. There are 3 sizes of jug, and I’m gonna use the smallest. Seems like some folks here would prefer the larger one!

Hey, hey, hey … I resemble that remark (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)Nice accessories. I think you chose correctly on the jug size, the smaller one looks to be more realistic for this setting. Ya gonna need a lot of them, though (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

yep the small one looks good next to those cases of mason jars. Nice work Jim(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Is that Ben H on the right as an old man ?

I prefer my moonshine come in jugs the size of Vic’s water tank.

Getting some details added including painting moonshine jugs, corn meal bags, axe/stump.

Working on funnel for filling up a jug, then I can afix everything to the base and get the ground on. After that it is building the roof, support for the “worm” and a few more details. Starting to see the light at the end of the funnel!

Great details, Jim!

And in case ya put a sound card in, here’s an audio file for it! (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Aech: it is a 1:24 scale fire so it is 1:24th the temperature. Duh! And I think everything in California causes cancer. I am hoping to avoid eating the PVC.

The mash goes in at the top of the kettle before the elbow, then the elbow and piping is added

Jim,

I can almost hear those guys whoopin’ it up even without a soundfile! Sort of makes me wish I could join the fun! On the other hand, there is no “morning after” for those two characters!

Eric

Such a fun little scene Jim. Really gets me itching to do the ceiling 1:24 Hilyer Highball whiskey runner .

If you plan to put it close to the ceiling, you better put some sturdy guardrails cause those Hilyer’s are known to come off the track if they’ve been drankin’ (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

The details are going to make this scene come alive.

Adding some ground cover over the PVC base, attached using a spray mixture of water + dishwasher soap + titebond 3:

Still wet. Will not be shiny tomorrow (I think!)…

Very cool. Real dirt, real stone, real wood … how 'bout some real shine (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)
