2021 Mik build Jim Rowson - Backwoods moonshine still

Thats an awesome patina

How about a moonshine runner’s car with the trunk open and a couple cases inside. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Well, I’m trying to keep this build manageable due to time constraints, but I like the idea. What I was actually thinking was to have this somewhere near the track and use my (under construction) rail truck as the under-the-counter delivery system. Here’s the rail truck so far [link]:

Great idea, Jim. Revenuers would never suspect a rail truck of hauling moonshine (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Jim you are coming very close to stealing the idea for my 1:24 ceiling micro layout. The “Hilyer Highball”. A whiskey runner train.

Working on the “furnace” to heat up the still:

The arched metal lining in the “furnace” is made from another part of the same tin can used for the still.

And how long do you expect that PVC sheet to last once you light the fire. And don’t forget that that PVC board has been found to contain cancer causing chemicals by the state of california

Cool furnace, Jim. I like the use of natural materials. How do you get the mash in the still?

Aech: it is a 1:24 scale fire so it is 1:24th the temperature. Duh! And I think everything in California causes cancer. I am hoping to avoid eating the PVC.

Dan: in all the pictures of stills I have looked at, none of them show a way to add mash or clean the still. Maybe ask Devon’s anonymous friend? Or maybe the access is on the hidden side of the still. Yeah, that’s it…

Jim, I did notice that all the photos seem to be from the same side, so there must be an access that I can’t see (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Well of course Dan would worry about the minutia of how to get the mash into the still. Is that really all that important? Lol. My anonymous friend said that the top of the still just below the neck is a slip fit into the rest of the still. You pop is off dump the goop in and then push it back on. Traditionally, and the way my friend does it, to seal the top you make a paste of flour and water and make a putty and seal the lid.

Well of course I’m most concerned how to get the mash in, otherwise its just an empty copper pot (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)Jim’s RR workers would not be happy if all they got out of that little pipe that goes round and round was hot air.

You know, Jim might just be making a flower making machine …

So, what day IS national still smashing day?

It depends on what day Opie turns you in to the Revenuers, Jim (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Of course, the still doesn’t just sit in isolation. There’s gotta be some shelter, wood for fire, some good ol’ boys, and a bunch of other stuff that I haven’t figured out quite yet.

So, I started with making a very outbacky kind of shelter. Went for a walk and found some small branches that were (coincidently) knocked down by a recent spate of wind. It may be a bit tall but I did that on purpose to make it easier for folks to see the details inside.

Gotta have a spot to put some cut wood. Will need a cutting stump and axe, etc. over in this area too.

And of course I need a place to put a jug to be filled. Not sure yet how tall the jug (+ funnel?) will be so nothing attached over here yet. Some 3D printed jugs are on their way from my future son-in-law…

These good ol’ boys are from a stash of figures I bought from Rick Marty (thanks Rick!). I didn’t realize that Santa was into hooch, but here’s proof (150 proof to be exact)! Those chairs are “carved” out of a thicker branch I had laying around.

I didn’t finish the “roof” on this rickety structure because I will need to wet-water-plus-Titebond-3 some “ground” onto the PVC base and I wanted to leave easier access for spraying.

Starting to look like a bit of a scene. Thinking about some planks on top of some tree stumps as a rough table where I can stage the full and empty jugs, maybe some raw materials. Will think about other details I can add in here.

Nice to have a full day today to work on this. Lots o fun…

Happy Mik-ing!

[edited to fix a couple of typos]

What a great scene, Jim! And that smashed Santa is a hoot! (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

That is really coming along good, and those figures do fit right in, who knew at the time huh(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Don’t forget a few drunk hogs laying around after eating all the mash that gets thrown out(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

You weathered that still to perfection. It looks real. Good job.

Most excellent Jim. This just looks authentic. I can see myself pulling up a stump.
