I’d say all these little structures are going to come together really nicely in the end.
I’m getting on to the last set of stairs. It’s a staircase whose form is dictates by function; namely, the place where it will be on the layout is high up there, but there is no room for long stringers. Hence, the back and forth stairs on a confined footprint…if that makes any sense. It goes tall but doesn’t take up much room on the ground…
It may need to go up one more flight of stairs, not sure yet.
I’m working on finishing these stairs, and I have a lot of finish work and staining and painting to do, not to mention I need to make the second mine entrance where these stairs lead, but I’m working on it. I hope I can get where I want by Tuesday so I can at least try to measure up to some of the other builds.
Some of these builds are turning out great and I’m watching all of them diligently. It’s fascinating really to see the different concepts take shape and different imaginations at work, not to mention the skill level, which is through the roof this year.
I love how tall that is. Should be an eye catcher…

Thanks, Dan, I KNEW this reminded me of something, that I got the idea from somewhere, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. I kept thinking those tenement houses you see back East, but actually it’s the fire towers we have all over the mountains around here…

No no no. Don’t stop. I live on challenges, peer pressure, and encouragement. I get more accomplished during these challenges than the rest of the year combined almost.

Those are nice stairs. The size of the steps looks like 4x12 or 3x12 so they will last many years with all of the miners climbing them with the grit on their boots. It will take a long time to wear through them. I am looking forward to seeing this in place on your layout.

Thanks, Colin. The thing I regret most is that I won’t have time to wear down the steps following your suggestion. And I don’t have the right attachment for my dremel drill to make it happen. I don’t know, maybe if I stop at the hardware store on my way home for work tonight…hmmmmm…

I had to add another flight of stairs to reach the mine entrance, and the last flight of stairs is by far the steepest…but isn’t that the way it should be on your way to heaven?
I stained the staircase, and I started building the platform that leads to the actual mine entrance, and barely started on the mine. Then I did some painting on the stairs to cover up the glue globbers or gobbers or whatever you call them. I still need to tone them down with mine tailings, and as I mentioned above to Colin, sooner or later I’ll wear the stair steps down.
This something I’m really happy with…I took a dowel, a nice clean pine dowel, sliced it up a little with the utility knife, stained it, and with that it turns into a log rail. Took no time at all, and I’m liking the way this came out.
So there it is painted and the platform almost ready.
Here’s the mine entrance I’m modelling. I know it’s really really late to be asking this question, but does anyone know where this mine is? Does anyone know what that hangman’s contraption is for on the the deck, and, finally, can anyone shed light on the purpose of the boards that you see bolted into the rock face above the mine? Any last minute information will be appreciated.
Tonight I got to put this thing together. It’s gonna be a late night, like really late.
edit: forgot to add the mine picture…geez…
I’d bet the hangman on the deck was fitted with block and tackle to lift tools and /or ore off the carts.
There may have been an aerial tram carrying ore down and miners and supplies up. The wall work might be the anchor for the bull wheel on the cable.
