2013 Winter Run photo thread

Thanks Ric ;]

It may look like Spring but it still feels like winter with a strong chilly breeze. Despite these obstacles the CVSRy crew fired Shay #5 one more time and took the test train out on the line for the staff photographer. There is still much work to be done on both #5 and the railroad before the tourist season begins but everyone is thrilled to have a large locomotive in steam this year.

We operate #5 logging style with the train up-grade from the locomotive. This will create a longer run for the passengers because we traverse the wye twice in order to keep the loco down-grade through Coal Dump Curve. It also opens the option for a shorter run to Deep Cut Tunnel & return without traversing the wye.

Next weekend is supposed to be sunny and warm. If it isn’t too muddy I might get to work on the track.

Our weather is sunny and not much wind. Cut down some of the grasses. Can’t do much with the ground, still very frozen. Good chance of just tearing stuff up, if you touch it. Plan to walk along the river this afternoon, watching the eagles, pelicans and seagulls diving for dinner.

Nice shots Jon

It looked like Spring until I saw the piles of snow

Glad you got a run in.

It was cold and sunny here, so I did manage to get a little work on the RR in.

Ralph

Jon the Shay looks great on your RR. I hope your ready for the increased traffic from all the tourists. Lets hope we dont get that snow strom wed/thur that they are talking about.

I love your shay, Is it a bachmann? Regards,Ron

Thanks all - Yup; still plenty of snow piles around.

@Ron - Yes; 1st Gen Bachmann. Read the sordid details of bringing it back from the junk box here: http://www.largescalecentral.com/forums/topic/18097/restoring-a-1st-gen-bachman-sha

I wish Bachmann came out with a new version of the two truck shay. Reagards,Ron

Looking a little more like winter today, but feels like spring :] Rounding Coal Dump Curve the tip of the plow is barely visible above the drifts…

This is the first time I got to use the new plow built last year. Positioned on the rear of the train it allows plowing the wye in a single pass…

By dark there probably won’t be much snow left but I really want to try out those lights :]

Hah! I remember them lights that explains the light I see now on the northern horizon that is coming and going

Nicely done Jon.I like the two plow idea.

Great shots Jon. I dont mind snow in March because you know it wont take long to melt away.

Well it was quite enjoyable plowing the railroad in 50 degree temps with bright sun. Much more fun than in the dead of winter. That afternoon the noise from melt run-off was deafening :] - It’s just amazing how fast March sun can melt snow. My yard is nearly clear of all snow piles now, but we re heading back into the deep freeze tonight.

Got to run some Bachmann trains today!

Yes I want to be just like John!

Weather was to nice had trouble with the workers!!

So nice 50’s and sunny (played hooky )

Sean

Nice Sean! There’s still a few more days of official winter left. Run 'em if ya got 'em.

Super nice photos guys.

It seems like I’m not the only one with worker troubles Sean. My guys got this cut finished after we got dumped on and then not much more before they gave up! The RR bosses after realising that this amount of snow was insurmountable were OK with letting nature melt it away.

I think we are past this kind of snow but then again it was only 24 degrees out this morning and living in New England who knows?

Even in North Jersey it was low 20’s this morning. Didnt even get above 35 last few days. Had some heavy snowshowers before.

Spring is Less then a week away and once again its snowing. Winter weather advisory is in effect for today. We can see 2-4 inches by tonight. Took the Climax out for some running.

To think I was in a t-shirt last weekend

Great pics guys!

Big flakes here today and quite heavy for a short time, but didn’t really amount to much. I spent the day sitting at the computer developing an EBT Tank & Tunnel tour guide for the Carlyle crew to use next week for exploration on the way to York. By the time i looked up it was dark!
