Large Scale Central

2013 Winter Run photo thread

The C.V.S.Ry. crew was a little peeved at management because the RR wouldn’t pay the guys to take a road trip to Agawam, MA to attend the largest train show in the area so they decided to fire Porter #3 and venture out over freshly fallen snow with a couple of cabeese. Overnight the area received about 2-3 scale inches of snow. Not enough to warrant running the wedge plow as it didn’t cover the rails in most spots. Just a perfect amount of snow for some photo ops even if it was cold  Here’s #3 just about to enter Coal Dump Curve on the way up the hill…

Still heading up-grade above Indian Hill Junction…

And just about to enter Deep Cut Tunnel…

Shoving down the wye and banging through the diamond at the Walk Trans-Load Facility…

And through the crossing at WALK…

Having reversed again at Nothville, now crossing WALK again on the West leg…

And past the Rust Garden…

And back at Indian Hill Junction…

Downgrade into Coal Dump Curve on the return trip…

Back in the sun approaching the passenger platform at Wall…

By the time that last picture was taken the staff photographer’s fingers were about frozen so we retreated back to the warm shops to get back to work on Shay #5.

Very nice Jon. I don’t get to see any snow in Florida.

Looks good Jon.
That is a nice amount of snow for good pictures.
I really hate missing out on road trips too

Where did that “Pecker” caboose come from? Stolen or purchased?

Caboose 20584 was donated to the Candlewood Valley Scenic Railway by the Jackson & Burke Railroad in the summer of 2009. The caboose traveled a rather circuitous route to get to Connecticut from Virginia. Bruce & Jean rode the caboose from the J&B to Ottawa Ontario where it traveled the rails of the Ironwood, Peter's Pond & Western for a time. That fall Fr. Fred rode the caboose to the Narrow Gauge convention in Maine where it was transferred to the care of my friend Lee Carlson, operator of the Shade Gap & Neelyton Railroad, It ended up spending the winter and spring at the SG&N. That summer Lee rode the caboose up to the Valley Railroad in Essex, CT where I met him to finally take possession. I rode the caboose back to Danbury where it was loaded on a truck for final delivery to the C.V.S.Ry. which has no connection to the outside world.

Nice shots Jon. Where did you get that figure in that one caboose? We ended up with about 1/4 inch of snow (2-3 scale inches as well) on top of the few inches we had from past storms. At least we dont have to deal with the wal of snow. My little guy was at the controls and the temp was a balmy 14 degrees

Nice pics Shawn. It was really cold here too. I was going to run the live steamer but my hands were numb. By the time they were working again the sun was going down. Maybe tomorrow. I’m really not sure where that figure cam from. I like him a lot. Here’s a close up…

I've been ready for it for 2 months now and all these train pix with snow in them don't help.......;)

Going to try and get out there earlier today and run the live steam Shay. There is still just a little bit of snow on Coal Dump Curve. I’d like to do a video but all I have is my old still camera that takes lo-res (VGA) video.

The Live Steam Shay made a run at the hill early this afternoon. Good plumes & nice light.

I took a few hundred more but just can’t decide what to post !

Nice pics Jon, and Shawn. Better you cold than me

Love that Shay Jon. Looks great with those Plumes. How did it fire up for you? You need to bring that back to place and run it on my layout again.

It fires great now. When at the Scanton Steam Up I asked how to get to the jet out to clean. It was so easy it’s not funny. The lance needles from my test kit are the perfect size to clean the orafice. Now that it’s clean it fires on the first try.

It’s still very herky jerkey in reverse, but runs pretty smooth in forward. I’m seriously considering adding a throttle servo.

The Shay is looking good, Jon. You did a nice job on the redo.
The VGA video would be better than none at all
Ralph

Glad its firing up for you now. You going to steamtown in Feb Jon?

I’d like to. What are the dates?
