2011 challenge - Loco Barn

Ok so here is what I have on hand for the challenge. Some yard signs, left over 1/2 X 1/2 wood rods from last winter I used on modles. Paint left over from last year and some coffee ster sticks from starbuckes. all I had to buy so far is glue but we were spoted that.

The plan is to build a barn that has been truned into a Loco shed for the railroad. They will do repair and refit work in the barn on the locos. I know I’m off to a late start on this but I have hopes I can pull it off in time.

Sounds like a plan.

Geoff’s in!

Ok from what I have read…Last year in a book about the SPC RR They were very good at using what was at hand. So it would be belivable that they would take a barn and reuse it as a loco shed or use the wood to build a House for the locos. As I have come to love th ecolors of the SPC loco and the Barry drives i have in them I belive the barn make seens and will work great with my railroad. Just look the other way when I run my SD70’s and 40’s on the layout. As far as planes go for this build I have to say I am kind of winging it a bit as I could not find what I was really looking for other then one pic. this is that pic

So that is the somewhat maybe barn /shed for my locos. Here is what I got done today.

here I had to use a muxing bowl as I forgot to bring my drafting stuff with me from St. Louis and to replace it would put me over the limit. Here I have layied out the front side and doors on the barn. I have to come up with a way to make the doors work. I’m thinking I may leave the front side of the corragtion uncut and have it act as a hinge for the door.

Here are the front and back and two sides cut out. I got lucky and the blood from the three cuts I got wiped right off. Now I need to work on the two upper sides and roof sections. Then I will have to get more coffee sticks from Starbucks this week.

ok so we could bag, borrow or steal what we needed. Well I desided to dumpster dive for what I needed. There is a fram shop by the appartment so I headed over there this morning after getting my startbucks and more stersticks to see what I could find in the dumpsert. Jack pot baby. Foam board city. So why I am digging in the dumpsert along comes a nice policeman. Should have seen his face when I told him I was getting stuff to buld a train barn for a challegen or a form and we cant spend more then 10.00 on supplies. seems there is a no trusspassing law thing and it applies to the dumpsters. Who would have thought trash being stollen was a big problem. He was nice he let me go and with my foam board but I had to promiss not to dumpster dive any more.

So mik would bail count toward the 10.00 limit?

Will get pictures and stuff as I get to building more.

if it is near and rich in bounty, you could ask the owner, if you might scavenge his thrash now and then.

Ok got some work done on this. I think I am going to cut it close on getting this one done on time.

here is some of the foam board I got out of the dumpster. this should help out but does anyone know how it holds up outside?

here it is taped togather so I can see how the sides fit. I also have the doors working. I cut the sign board from the back and left the front uncut to act as a hinge for the door. Once I have all the parts cut out and fitted right I will paint it al and glue it all togather.

i tyhink, it would help, if you close all cuts with paint or glue, that no moisture can get into the foam.

Ok got a little more done tonight. I’m working on the fitting before I start to paint it.

I have used some painters tape to hold it all togather for the fitting.

Once I am happy with the fit I will lay out the windows and then paint the thing. I’m thinking a light green with dark green trim seeing all my MOW stuff is painted that way.

Thats looking good. I still have not started mine. Been busy shoveling.

Geoff, nice engine house…

thanks guy. still trying to get the fit right. It might be a 20 foot building. Looks good at 20 feet but dont get to close. Might have to cualk up some of the gaps. Will have to see what I can talk the building mantaince guy out of. So far I have not had to buy anything yet that counts. Thing of glue and a box of band-aids.

Is it done yet?

Almost. Waiting on the building inspector to sign off on the plumming

Coming along nicely Geoff

Got the peaces painted this weekend and have started to put it togather. Had to got with a diff color then I was going to do. Reason did not have enought green paint so I used tan for the sides, and brown for the base.

Next up is working on the roof. Have to come up with how to make it look like a metal roof with out having any metal to do that with.

Looking good. What is the material?

Yard signs and some foam board. I am using some scrap wood I had from last year to reinforce the bottom and corners.

Alright I’m not sure I will have it all done by the dead line but I am trying. Still working on the roof. here are the parts painted.

Also worked on getting the rerst of the sides on.

Then on the roof supports.
