Large Scale Central

2011 Challenge - Harlem Transfer

This morning’s work will be the roof bits. First I mounted scrap bits for the roof to sit on, attached them to the inside of the sides, about 2 feet down, and then cut a piece to fit the roof hole. Then I cut strips for the ‘cap stones’, scored them every 18 inches, and glued to the top. Office roof done and set in place.

Looks good. I highly recommend some drain holes for that roof. You don’t want that to fill with rain water. I drilled a few holes in the wall, and put in some styrene tube to act as drain pipes.

Yea, I had thought about that. Prototypical, too!

Thats looking nice. The drains will really make it, especially ones that will work.

Correction. I used brass tubes for the drain pipes. I didn’t want something that might be destroyed by UV.

Hm. Gonna have to ‘roll my own’, I think. Only have 1/2" brass tube, kinda big for a roof drain!

Maybe not. At least that shouldn’t clog up!

Are you putting a floor in this? Or bottom, I guess?

I was quite surprised when I picked up Miracle Chair Company and found a mouse nest inside.

Any plans for ventilation? I was thinking of making some “functional” roof vents. With screens in them to keep the bugs out, but haven’t come up with a good plan.

I’m not sure about a base. If I mount it on a base, then when critters get inside, I can’t clean them out.

That’s why you need operating doors, that way you can pick it up and shake them critters out with the doors open!

A cotton ball soaked in Citronella oil will keep most critters out. Just put it in the corner and freshen it now and then.

Neat idea Steve thanks for the tip

One awning in place. I need to add the end supports for it, but this is the look.

That sure looks neat. What are you planning for the awning treatment?

Is your main roof sagging a bit, or is that just a shadow?

No, its sagging. Its just there set in place until I get the building painted, and the doors and windows on, then the roof bits will get glued up.

Not sure what to do about the awning, as far as material goes. Its probably riveted tin or something on the prototype, so maybe Ill just scribe and paint it dark gray.

You might want to look at some of those metallic spray paints, or Sophisticated Finishes. I’m surprised that the roof is sagging - I thought you said you were using the 6mm stuff?

Not for the roof. Only had 4x8 of the stuff!

Yea, the rusted metal might be good for the roof. Give it a flat black coating, then rust it up.

Yeah, 4x8 seems like it’s a lot…until you start cutting pieces out for a large building. Go for the REAL rust!

Yep. A 2x4 foot building, almost 2 feet high at the peak, uses up a lot of product!

One loading dock done.

With a 30 foot box car and some track for comparison.
