Large Scale Central

2011 Challenge - Harlem Transfer

Possibly. Id really like 6x9 inch panes, but I may have to make do with square ones… ah, the price of being picky.

Of course, all my hardware cloth is under 2 feet of snow right now…

Well, there’s always styrene

and jigs…

paint them in.

Bob, here’s an idea I’ve used before…cut grooves in Plexiglas with mini table saw…spray paint ( I didn’t put much paint on here)…wipe surface with solvent…use either side facing out. You could cut the grooves before removing the protective paper but then you’ll have a lot of weeding to do. The saw I used has a thinner blade I could have used…I think this one is about 3/32" Grooves facing out

Neat trick Larry! You could also do the saw kerfs in a much larger piece of plexiglass and then cut your windows out of the bigger sheet. (sort of mass producing).

Nice look Larry. And, I like Randy’s add on

Hm, interesting. Idea, that might just work

Ignoring the windows for the moment, here’s the styrene for the doors. Evergreen #4530, 1/4" corrugated siding.

Boy that’s a real hot seller for Evergreen lately!

And now for a window experiment. White paint pen on acrylic. I think this might work just fine.

I thought of that too because a lot of live steamer engines get lined…but have no access to a paint pen. Let us know how scratch resistant it is after it dries

Today’s progress so far. I think I have the doors figured out. Do they look OK, or should they be recessed more?

1/4" is good. IMHO

Test of the paint pen with the 4 windows on the side

Looks good Bob.Studying the pics I can see where the selective compression paid off, as that is going to be a large structure.

Actually, I decided to not compress it. I have the real estate where this is gonna go, so its full size, 40x70 feet. Doesn’t count for the contest, too big, unless I can get special dispensation…

Bob, why don’t you try recessing the doors a bit more, while still at this stage, just to see what it looks like. I think it would be a bit better to have them recessed 12 scale inches, or so.

I like what you have done so far. I, too am interested in the longevity of the white paint.

Floquil makes paint pens in various colors. I have some for weathering track. I don’t know if they have a white product or not.

I like the paint pen idea better than the automotive pinstripe for the windows! Gonna try that…
As for the doors the look like they are about 3/64" off from the pictures
If you have any coro that 4530 slides up and down quite nicely in the ends if you split it with a coro cutter or just a knife?
Looking real good!
