2011 build challenge!

Ok, we did it a couple times last winter, and I think we had fun. Now it’s time for another one!

Subject(s): structure, non-rail vehicle, or mini scene.

Size: 1 sq in to 288sq inches (2sq feet) actual

Budget: Maximum of $10 in new expenditures - beg, borrow, trade, but please don’t steal whatever else you may need. This includes paint and glue. But we’ll spot everybody 1 new tube of glue and 1 new bottle of paint off the expense sheet. Fair enough?

Qualifications: Must be a new project, entirely researched, planned and constructed during the challenge period. Challenge period will run Friday January 7 to Monday February 14 2011, beginning and ending at 10PM Pacific time. Giving you 37 days and/or 6 weekends. Entries with build log and materials/expense list should be posted on this forum no later than Friday Feb 18, 2011

Voting/Judging: The voting will be done by all general forum members, and will begin Sat the 19th and run through the following Friday the 25th. Judging will be based on the following: 1. Overall appearance/execution 2. Originality 3. Clarity of photo/description log. A maximum of 10 bonus points will be awarded to beginning builders to help level the field. There may or may not be a 4th category of ‘builder’s favorite’ determined by popular vote of the participants themselves.

Prize? TBA

OK, who’s in?

I’m definitely in.

Does it count if I get free metal via my school machine shop where I work? We’re throwing it away if I don’t take it

I said, "beg, borrow, or trade, but not steal".... so just as long as you ask somebody, it's 'free'!

If it’s already in your scrapbox, it’s ‘free’ as well. If you can horsetrade for junk you need off somebody else, it’s free… unless you’re both trying to cheat by buying the other guy’s stuff.

The point of the challenge is for you to think, to scrounge, and to build something neat on the cheap.

Im in

I guess Mik got impatient waiting for Shawn to propose the next challenge
I think I have enough “junk” around here to whip something up…
Ralph

although i have some doubts, if i will be able to finish in time (just accepted a temporary community job) i am in.

anybody will help me to decide, what to build?
three things come to mind. a two storey hotel, a big livery stable or loading corrals for the station.

I vote Hotel. The other two are too close to what I'm considering..............and your imagination and execution are so much better :) Ralph

LOL I got tied up with my Climax and now the skeleton log cars. I keep adding more and more projects.

Hm, at the speed I make things, I don’t know if I’ll finish in time, but I’ll give it a swing.

Ralph, are you fishing for compliments?
your reasoning reminds me of what would be needed for detailing of a corral…

Korm,
Just trying to steer you in the right direction
Ralph

What the heck, I’m in. I do need a new train station.

well, ehem…, out of my own, uninfluenced decision i’m going to model “THE GREENBUCK HOTEL”

What teh heck. I have some old campain signs and stuff I can pack up and take with me. I am guessing if I already have the paint that doesnt count against me. I have been looking for a loco shed so I will get started in a week or so once out in CA.

I’m done with my engineering and plans. Count me in. How many pictures are we to submit? And to what address? I will send a picture of my “junk” box and can with my project photo.

Mike, you just start a thread in this forum, and put in the title “Challenge 2011” + whatever (your name, what it is, your railroad, whatever)
We don’t need a photo of your junk box, we’re on the usual honor system. The small bragging rights you get, and nominal ‘prize’ just ain’t worth cheating over for most folks.

Engineering & plans.........................if that isn't cheating, it should be  Welcome, Mike. Ralph

Ralph, you are wrong!
everybody needs plans to see, how much the result differs from the idea.

welcome Mike!
post as many pics as possible, it will never be too much.

Welcome Mike!

Welcome Mike. Glad to see you getting into the challenge. Its a great time
