2 Cyl Shay project

I got a 3 cyl motor from Dave a few years back to make a two cylinder shay. There was an article in Finescale RR Apr/May 1999 issue to cut it down, which I did a bit differently. I used one cylinder to make my one cylinder shay with, but never got to the two cylinder. So I dug it out after finishing 2906 for something to do in the winter. I had started years ago, so took a while to dig out the parts. Had to change a few things for the drive and am now working on boiler details. Wanted to post this, after reading how, and see how it goes.

Cool…your a building machine lately!!

That’s really nice so far.

Don’t let Shawn see that…

Too late Ken  Cant wait to see what it will look like when done. Nice work so far.

I made the front light for the shay. Used a sold block of plastic, drilled a 1/2" hole for the light. I used a plastic silver Christmas bell for the reflector, will uncover that once I paint it.

Making some ‘plumbing’ from a copper ground wire and a couple of bearings.

Take the plunge and do the pre 1905 crankshaft bracket!

Looking great Jerry! Love the reflector idea! Funny how a modeller will invent new uses for unrelated items! I’ll be watching for further updates. Oh, the the aluminum tape looks good on the vertical part of the boiler, too!

Nice work Jerry.

I’ll be following this build with interest! Looks great so far!

I’m slowly getting the ‘plumbing’ on the boiler. Plan it to be an open cab shay. It got bumped by the 1/32nd Geep shell I got off ebay.

Got a bit more done to the shay. Boiler detail is good enough for me now. Bachman rail truck boards were used in the tender. I’ll use metal duct tape with rivet detail in them to wrap the white areas. Tool box is about done. Planning out the roof.

The ‘other’ side. Large air tank to fill some space, not sure what that thing is I scratched from a picture I found.

Jerry;

The “thing” may be some kind of steam-powered water pump - for pumping water into the tender tank. A lot of logging lines were too temporary to bother with building water tanks out on the log gathering branches. They would just pump water from a clear-running stream beside the track.

Hope this helps,
David Meashey

Jerry, a question for you about using duct tape:

Have you had any trouble with the embossed rivets getting flattened when handling the loco?

Your flesh just forms around them, they don’t stick up all that much, so they don’t get a lot of pressure. Just buy a roll and mess around with it Ray. It does not cost very much. Just get the Nashua brand. True Value usually has it.

But don’t stick it on anything that you don’t really want it stuck too!!!

I got a little more done to the shay. Finished up the boiler plumbing, made a water tank and some sandboxes on the back. Tool box is done also. Roof is finally glued, now need to plank/cover it.

cool!

Very unique engine, love the open sided Shays!

Geeze, Jerry, that’s beautiful!
