Everything was completed and track laid. However, today I decided to place cars on the tracks and make a trial run to see how it would work out.
Not good. Two problems arose. The first was that three cars did not clear a switch. The second was that I realized that the board which would need to be moved to access draws containing tools and items usually associated with workshops/garages should ideally have the single track upon it.
So this afternoon - wet and windy outdoors - the track layout was reversed and a small additional length gained. This will solve the switch issue and give better access to the drawers.
Tomorrow afternoon should see trials with stock - I believe they will be successful.
Stock being used is Aristo 2 bay covered hoppers and offset 2 bay coal hoppers and some Bachmann Big Hauler boxcars. These were chosen as they are the shortest length cars I have.
A further alteration, Stage III, has now taken place. This gives a total length of 16ft., allows the use of eight cars - as the inventor anticipated - plus giving me more operational interest.

Reading through the latest on this thread and got to wondering about how you shuffle, shake or pick which cars you take. Then, that led to the storage of the pennies and that led the thoughts to those old change holders that the vendors, busmen and ice cream salesmen wore on their belts.
How do you shuffle the coins?
Thinking about some type of tube or holder, where the coins come out hidden from your view, until they appear. certainly don’t know the game of Baccarat or even if I’m spelling it correctly, but doesn’t that work that way with cards? Its preloaded and invisible to the eye until it is chosen.

I store about 20 cars and the coins and a few tools in a plastic semi-shed-like box. So, the cars are picked at random from two shelves, each holding about 10 cars. The coins are actually kept in a small container that used to contain some food product. You can just see it in this picture down near the orange ventilated boxcar.
When drawing coins, I shake the coins in the container then just reach in and grab one. Seems random enough. It’s a bit too cold to be out there lately…

That is exactly why I built me set up in my garage. Even so half an hour out there is long enough…brrrrr!

That picture leads me to believe that this idea was hatched when the two of us were running Burke Yard at TrainOps and I was using change to mark the cars to pull from a string

Hm, maybe I need an assortment of car markers at Burke and Franklin Falls for each of my towns…
