1930s Speeder

Has anyone ever seen a picture of one of those 1930s “new fangled” Speeders? The crew of the D&D wants one for Christmas!

Just Google (images) “Fairmont Speeder.” I’m guessing this is what you meant. Correct me if wrong, please.

Doug, here’s some. Sorry about the sizes.

I’ve ridden that bottom one

Drunk or sober?

And here are others…

You wouldn't be able to stay on if not sober :) These things are scary as hell bouncing across switches in the yard :o

Those are all great pictures and I might even be able to build a 1930s version for the layout. The question is…if you are riding one of those would you need a kidney belt?

I came up this guy for the KMRR. Its the KMRR version of the M3. I used a Hartland woody rail car.

Womens work! :)

That EBT speeder is really cute! Here’s a pic of it prior to being refurbished:

It can be argued that the M-3 was not so much Refurbished as it was Replicated. The frame and the motor block are original. The wood body was completely rebuilt and the brakes / pilot were re-invented. Personally I think they did a great job bringing it back to life. The replicated / re-invented parts don’t bother me.

Boy these things are a real hoot. I can feel some modeling juices flowing.

The main challenge with building these Speeders will be getting the running gear no matter which one gets built. I’ll have to start looking…

I highly recommend this one if you’re going to ride a speeder. This was the track foreman’s speeder–notice the sprung seats. Makes for a smoother (though certainly not bump-free) ride. I’ve got a B’mann handcar, minus the handcar parts that I got for a few bucks at a swap meet that’s destined to become a model of one of these. Building the model of the speeder will be the easy part (all I need is an engine-looking thing and some benches.) Fitting the battery, digital sound chip for the motor sound, speaker, and battery onto the trailing car will be a bit more of a challenge. Later, K

Kevin, I like riding that one too. Not so much for the springs, but for the hand grabs on the seats!

Kevin; Great project idea. My guys are soft. They wanted more comfort. The trailer actually has the motor and propels the VW bug.

I’ve added more detail since I took this view. I’ll try to find a more recent photo and upload it later. Best, David Meashey P. S. This view was taken on the layout at the C&O Museum in Clifton Forge, VA. The layout was not operable due to the ballast being washed out by heavy rain over the summer.

At least the bug looks like it’s in service now.

Very cool Dave!
