Large Scale Central

1930s Speeder

If you realy want to model a speeder here is what you need to build. Rick

That’s too cool! I have to build one of those someday!

My sentiment exactly Ray!!

Shawn,

WRONG!!! Bugs are the original VW Beetle from the seventies and back. Punch buggies are the new generation. And for reference, my kids always referred to the old style as ‘Herbies’ after the Walt Disney movies ‘Herbie the Love Bug’.

That steam-powered speeder would keep you warm on a cold day!

Where did you find the spoke wheels on the cart? That’s what I’m looking for!

There’s one of those things rusting and rotting away in a field near me.
A gas unit–not steam.
Maybe I should find out who owns it and aquire it. This one has a roof with open sides.
(Or make a midnite run…:slight_smile: :slight_smile: )

Doug,
Tthat wagon was made by MDC back in the day and they are tough to find now the wheels are even tougher to find.

Chas

Doug;

Don’t know whether they would have a similar wheel, but check Ozark for that style wheel. I think it’s actually known as a “pressed steel” wheel. Also, the old MDC speeders or parts of them may show up among the junk tables at shows.

One caution should anyone acquire an operating speeder or trailer, they used an Athearn 12v motor. Deliver more than 12v to the track, and the smoke may be more than a special effect. I really doubt that these speeders would hold any curve at much over 10v, but thought I should mention it anyway.

Best,
David Meashey

David,
Is there a way to put DCC in these speeders usign the decoder to limit the current to them? Jsut wondering out loud? Same goes for a basic RC & battery control. Can it be done that way?

Chas

Chas;

Wish I knew, but I am not a DCC guy. I suppose one of the N or smaller HO decoders could be slipped inside with the motor. Not much room in that box, but I know some guys have done it with less space to spare.

As for RC and battery, my guess is that you would need another trailer with cartons on it to hide the RC and batteries. I had rigged up the trailer to run on a pair of 9v batteries in parallel. The batteries were strapped to the top of the trailer, as it was a temporary arrangement. The 9v batteries seemed to give it a fair amount of run time, but I did that so long ago that I no longer remember exactly how long the thing ran on a single pair of batteries.

Yours,
David Meashey

All the same to me :slight_smile:

Dave,
I have a co-worked that is active i the smaller scales and he has shown me stuff that friends of his have done in n scale with Dcc…It’s possible I’m sure. As battery technologies is getting smaller it seems you should be able to get “something” crammed into that space.
