YouTube and compression

Hi all,

After having an account for almost a year I finally bit the bullet. BUT now come all the questions.

The Panasonic TZ5 saves video in MOV format, so I converted that to either AVI or WMV, then used the MS MovieMaker.

Question1: Anyone figured out if the lower res in MM (smaller file) provides better results? What settings do you use?

Question2: Has anyone figured out if converting to AVI to process in MM is more efficient than converting to WMV?

Question3: Anyone figured out what happens with the brightness values in the different modes? Which retains the original best?

Ahhhh looks like I’m on the right track, now one can select standard or high quality. That’s more like it!

Man, don’t do that - had to sprint to the loo!

Seriously, congratulations on a huge effort! How much more of the five tonnes is left to shift?

The MOV suffix usually refers to QuickTime files. Our Panasonic Lumix saves natively in the same format. Unfortunately, there’s no substitute for pixels, and the resolution you’ll get from a MOV file isn’t comparable to what a camcorder can produce (e.g., MPGs of various descriptions).

You’ll find that the compression algorithms used by sites like You Tube and Vimeo will produce better results if you feed them something with more pixels than exist in a MOV file.

It was Swiss water. I hear HJ has been taking a "leak" in the back yard for years now preparing for this moment

All kidding aside…it looks great HJ.
Ralph

So did I Dave…almost didn’t make it.

It does look great, HJ…

Hans, you use concrete over a rubber liner?

Thanks guys! Any of you have a bladder problem??

No Jerry, I skipped the rubber liner :(, which means I still have some small leaks. Nothing too serious since the falls don’t run all the time.

Dave, I hear you. To shoot the real stuff I’ll get out the good old Canon ES4000. Also did some sleuthing to find out what the Pros use

MP4 at the native 320x240 YouTube res and with the highest quality that will fit into the 10min or 100Meg limit. Reading all that “stuff” makes my eyes glaze over, but if it helps with the quality …

There is quite a bit left in the driveway that needs to be placed to build up the RoW embankments - you better believe there is good drainage with all that stuff. But I probably have to do another trip for more “hand rocks”.

Well, you know how “old dogs” get…

The MP4 and DivX family of codecs currently provide the best fit between quality and compression. They’re the standard for streaming video (e.g., YouTube). AVI files are in the same family.

If the ES4000 doesn’t produce native MP4, there are a swag of freebies available that will do the conversion for you. The quality will be noticeably better than MOV files.

After trying YouTube, Google Video and Vimeo … the choice is Vimeo.

An additional Vimeo feature: the uploaded file can be downloaded in its original state

Nice aharp vid , looks the best , really nice .

Thank you Sir!

Watching all three, it’s easy to see the progress you’ve made. What does the 33 under Settings mean?

Vimeo is my choice, too:

I created this channel for train vids and tried to password-protect a video that had our grandsons on it. That didn’t work.

It looks like passwords only work on your site, not on any channels you create.
