You know you're getting old when

You know you’re getting old when you won’t go out and take a picture off the trestle.

In Bostic I found this Chessie caboose on a Thermal Belt RR siding.

I believe it belongs to a Clinchfield Historical group. Unfortunately vandals have had their way. I took this through a missing window.

While there I heard a train whistle and managed to get this shot. About half the cars were very old and probably heading for scrap.

Bostic claims to be the real birthplace of Lincoln. At the Bostic Lincoln Center they have a caboose on display.

Went down the road to Ellenboro. The last time I was here the station was in disrepair. Nice to see they fixed it up.

My lucky day as a train passed through while I was at the station. My unlucky day as the batteries died in the camera. Replaced them just in time to snap this shot a fraction of a second late.

Unit controlled from the lead locomotive bringing up the rear. Ralph

Ralph, great old trestle, any idea on rough length? Is it on an old Chessie line?
Too sad for that old caboose, some people just should be taken out and shot.
Great pics

Nice shots Ralph,
Guess I’m gonna have to raise my RR and put in handicap ramps, safety bars in the bathroom for your visit. I’d better wait to make my F40 shed as one of you guys will probably back into it.

I should explain Rooster. Wasn’t worried about falling. Heights don’t bother me. Rather enjoy them. I was more worried about getting “busted” for being up there. A few years ago I would have thought nothing of it. I did venture out a short ways, but it was pretty windy up there. The trestle is on an old Seaboard Airline route into Ruth NC. I’d say it is somewhere between a quarter and half mile long. Years ago it served many textile mills, saw mills and Broyhill Furniture. The trestle was probably a factor in abandoning the line. A pretty large saw mill is just beyond the south end of the trestle. Here is a shot looking up at the bents. Ralph

That looks better than most of the trestles around beautiful downtown Deer Park.

Quite a bit of rot where the rails were attached. Even worse on the steel section of the trestle. Which is the “darker” area half way across. Ralph

Hmm, looks like there were no guard rails on that trestle. Interesting…

Most likely a generator.

I’d guess an alternator or generator.

NO walkway or fire barrels, either.

Ooops Ralph

I look at it this way, is it that your now older and now WISE enough to know walking out onto a deteriorating dryrotted old bridge with no handrails is inherently not a very wise thing to do?

Believe it or not many RRs removed the guard rails as they really did not do what they where designed to do. There was a big push by RR back in the 80s to remove a lot of guard rails. It was a RR’s choice and a lot of them did rip them out. Walk ways where not mandatory back then as they are now. Guess the RR figured it did not need fire barrels. Later RJD
