Large Scale Central

Yet another trackwork thread

So wish I could be there, Bob. Have someone derail a car for me. Or hoist a beer. Whichever comes first.

If Radder’s coming you better bolt that lantern down.

I hope to make it back there for one of these party…. Err beer drinking sessions…. Ops sessions

Everything thawed while I was in vacation, so time to order in some supplies. Rebuilding the yard at Burke is on this years list. I need three LH switches here. The rest is just replacing the bad track with new SS

Do you have a source for Code 250 stainless, or are you “downgrading” to code 332.

Sunset Valley still has it. The new (last couple of years) owners are producing. Met them at the Northeast show last year. Nice couple, really trying hard.

Sounds great! If I ever escape to the outdoors I’ll probably need to source some track. I have one box of 5 foot Aristo Stainless and one box of AML Aluminum, both code 332. I’d sell the stainless if I could find a source for code 332 Aluminum. AML no longer makes it.

Try Railcraft/Micro Engineering…if they are still in business.
Why would anyone bother with stainless, if they are not using track power ?
The smaller code rail may look great, but the 332 stands up much better out in the real world…
Aluminium works great…
We use whatever is least expensive around here, and just use what is available at the lowest price. we even mix and match, as long as the track/rail is in gauge and doesn’t cause derailments, we are good to go…!!
I just discovered that we have 5 boxes of the Railcraft/Micro engineering tie strip…in case we need it…

It’s a lot more robust. It will survive being stepped on (humans and dogs) and tree branch drops. Especially in the smaller codes. I use 332. I was all stainless outdoors in CT but sold all of that to Stan a year ago. I went stainless when I built because I was track power then. I’ll be elevated on benches here, so aluminum will be fine.

Bob,

since you are rebuilding, can you spread out the center distance between tracks, as i recall several are too close for reasonable clearance.

Fred,

Micro Engineering doesn’t have any rail available in large scale code 250 or 332 at this time. the do have some code 205 alum at roughly $10 for a 6’ stick but is not listed. best bet to match ME code 250 is Llagas Creek.

Related to trackwork, I got the fill and all leveled for the wye at Franklin Falls. This is in front of the shed. The tail of the wye will go behind the shed itself.

where is the tracks going into the shed for car storage?

That comes after next year’s helix project. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

There will be a track that crosses over the middle of the wye that will run into the shed. When I built the shed extension it was designed to be the same height at the Franklin Falls bench work for exactly this purpose.
